Ad faces are most annoying thing ever! Don't f**king stare at me from every page I open ffs! Who do you think you are? NSA?

Post

Yes I do. If they were just music ads, I would not block them, but I get all kinds of ridiculous and sometimes (to me) offensive ads here and elsewhere, so I just block everything.
Sweet child in time...

I use noscript but not any ad blockers. Noscript blocks the most obnoxious ads and a lot of trackers buy it doesn't block all ads - I still see ads on kvr and have even clicked on some of them. I don't mind ads per se but as with a lot of things on the Internet, a few bad apples mean I'd rather not have pups blocking the content I'm trying to view. That kind of advertisement is pretty counterproductive anyway, as the only emotion I'm likely to associate with both the product and the site is frustration. Before noscript there were sites I stopped visiting because of these obnoxious ads which is in nobody's interest.

I've not had any tasteless out dubious ads on kvr though like others have reported in the past
I appreciate that scantily clad chicks can be an issue of you're viewing the site at work but I only get music ads (same on YouTube where I generally get ads for massive instruments and not much else).

Post

Yeah, I use an ad blocker. I still see some ads here on KVR though. The background ads are a bit annoying sometimes, when you click them by mistake.

Could well be, i'm not really familiar with the models they use tbh. I only saw one site advertising that you could have ads with 1.000 clicks for 1 cent once. :P

actually, some things really are free

it is a personal choice whether to view advertising or not. just because i choose not to does not mean i begrudge ben the money he makes from it. stick a paypal 'donate' button on the site and i'd be very happy to contribute

i use adblock plus all the time and i absolutely refuse to turn it off.

there are some sites that wont load if they detect an adblocker (though i have a thing that fixes that too, for the most part)...i especially wont turn it off for those.

it isnt so much that i dont want to see the ads, its the fact that ads are too intrusive and they hinder browsing.

I don't think many share your attitude. It's commonly known that only very few donate for software projects if you make it free and add a donate button. I don't share the view that "some things are really free" either. There's always server costs to pay for example.

i'm sure many do not share my attitude concerning donation, but i offer my personal feelings in response to the implication that my refusal to have marketing clutter pulling my focus, and pissing me off, is depriving money from ben, contributing to the possible downfall of the site, and priming me for a good whining

and i understand that there are always costs involved. but there are many cases in which those costs are not passed on to the public

i still get sporadic bits of heinous spam though but not to often these days.
i also have a plug that blocks flash etc...
+1

Adblock saves me a sh*tload of time closing popups from downloads, waiting for annoying ads on youtube etc. etc.

nonsense.

if youre saying that allowing ads is some form of "payment"...why do i have to pay (in any way) to access a site that isnt a pay site? i already paid for my computer and my internet access. in fact i pay a premium for good internet access. why should i have to be inundated with browser killing ads that all but negate the high speed access i actually do pay for?

using kvr as an example, i see people say that its slow to load...not for me. kvr loads nearly instantaneously for me. not only that but its nice and clean looking with no adds whatsoever. its not my responsibility to pay for a site that isnt a pay site. the way i see it...im "paying" by contributing to the content.

if the people who run kvr think that users should pay for it...then they should make it a pay site, or at the very least add a donation button as was mentioned by someone else.

i get the feeling though that the owners of kvr dont really care about adblockers. they get to have the ads and people get to not see them.

whats the problem with this scenario?

Exactly how I feel. I'm sick of every surface in the world being exploited by marketing and I'm sick of marketing ruining the Internet. If only Adblock could disable those obnoxious JavaScript panels and page darkening things and leave the rest alone. Or better yet, I wish the Internet went back to being built for efficient transmission of acceptable amounts of data, instead of every god damned page having some kind of scripting and shit tons of bloat. :x

I don't think I ever clicked on an ad in my entire life. Usually I'm too busy looking up what I actually wanted to see and read or hear. Most ads on most sites have not enough to do with the content that I'm interested in. So yeah, I use adblock and other stuff like blocksite to filter down to something reasonable. If the ads aren't too aggressive I don't mind them, but in recent years, it's like ads have taken over most web pages.

Also I don't use social media, so all that PlusOne, LinkedIn, FaceBook, Twitter, Meebo, Pocket, MySpace, etc garbage I filter out too. The nice thing is with a site well filtered, the normal content is so much easier to read and the pages look aesthetically pleasing like the web designers would have liked.

I'd turn of adblock if the sites had relevant ads about stuff that I liked. So far KVR has some ads poking through my adblock settings, but at least they are mostly relevant, even though I probably won't click on them. Sorry dudes, that's life.

Nope. KVR is my favorite forum and so far i've never got offensive and annoying ad when i'm checking the forum.

If everybody who visited my site would block ads I would not be able to keep putting in the hours and money to maintain it. I have a big fat donate button on my website but that only gets clicked on a few times a year, so that's not going to pay my bills...
