It's already been mentioned, but I find that by far the best thing to do when I don't know where to go with my stuff is to actually sit down and listen to (other people's) music. I can get so wrapped up in the minutia of producing that I forget something very simple and important: I actually LIKE music. After all, hearing great music that other people have done is the reason all of us wanted to make our own music in the first place.

Been there, done that. Last time she visited, I took my phone and went to bathroom.. Well.. When I came out from there, she seemed a bit bothered. Guess I don't know how to keep quiet

Yeah, she must be out, drinking with mine :hihi:

it's kvr, so really the only advice should be that you need to buy some more stuff

no matter how full your plugin folder, you are only lacking inspiration because you don't own doon2, deev-uh, ohm-nest-fear-too or ze-bra. buy all of these and you will be hella inspired :-P

no, seriously though.......

having been in the same position as you for quite a while, i have looked to completely change my MO. i came to realise that the actual process of production via daw was killing my inspiration i.e taking musical ideas and gradually stripping away anything that was musical trying to negotiate the very unmusical nature of the production process. don't get me wrong, there is definitely a place for this (much of which is returning by learning better workflows), but at the moment the whole process just strips away much of the fun i used to find in music

for my own personal cure, i have actually had to spend money.

1) i bought a portable interface that allows (now i have received the correct cables) me to wander around with my iPad and capture field recordings. in a couple of days i'll be out and about, tapping and hitting things like a loon, hoping to capture my own personal take on how the real world sounds. though i do actually have libraries that contain many of the same types of hits, i am hoping that grabbing my own will make me feel a little more connected to the sounds i am intending to use (much less menu-trawling also).

2) also, been demoing a program called 'usine'. while it is definitely going to be an investment in learning, i am looking for it to allow me to perform my more electronic music ideas more organically. i remember countless times where inspiration has appeared via happy accident while just jamming out ideas, but my normal daw is too linear to work it in quite the same way

3) changing genre. this is a little strange for me as i never really thought i had a genre. however, i have started looking into producing ambient music, not just because i like it, but because it's minimalist approach is kinda diametrically opposed to how i have worked before. i see it as quite a discipline (for me) to resist throwing everything at each passage, and just letting the music breathe

this whole approach, for me, is about being ready to harness the inspiration that is all around (without), rather than trying to drag out (kicking and screaming) what i have lurking somewhere within

not sure any of this is helpful to you, nor how well it will work out for me. just some ideas

Thank you and of course it is :) People usually think differently so every point of view helps.

If you think there's a problem here somewhere, try to get to the root of it. There must be a reason you lost your inspiration. Maybe that's not even the right way to phrase it. We make music because we get some kind of reward / satisfaction out of it. So, there must be a reason why making music is not that stimulating for you anymore. There must be a reason why you'd rather spend time on facebook or netflix, rather than make music.

do_androids_dream gave some very practical advice. I can really relate to it, since I'm pretty much in the same position as you, and it's the kind of advice I would give to someone else too.

One other thing that's worth mentioning, is not to be too critical of your music. Especially when you're working on a new project. It really goes against the creative process, and you won't be able to get into that state of flow, where you're totally absorbed in your music and not paying attention to anything around you. This is probably the most addictive thing about music making. Go back listen to your older tracks and think about what was different back than, what inspired you. In fact, my advice would be the opposite of what was suggested previously. try not to listen to anything new for a couple of weeks or a month. Listen only to your older tunes, and maybe you'll feel inspired to create something similar again.

Stuck
1.Do a sound design session .You will be inspired for a track from some inspiring sound design.
2.Learn a new technique ..musical or engineering one.
3.Organise your tools /sample library
4.Concentrate on learning a plug in inside out.
All these methods take away the onus to make a track rather they lead to ideas for a track.
Everyone has writers block now and again and these are my goto methods when this happens.
Have fun :-)

The 'Shining' is a good movie to watch if you've lost your inspiration and are trying to get it back.
