I like to finish tunes in batches, if I'm working on an EP it makes sense that they should all sound consistent. So i'll probably leave a track 70-80% done and come back to it when I'm ready to finish them off together. So long as the main structure and main ingredients are down its really just about getting into the right mindset. With some time away and an end-product in sight i find the required final touches become much more apparent.

Having said that, there is always a case of nothing's ever really completely finished. I reckon if i plotted a graph of amount of track development/improvement against time spent working on it, i'd have a clear exponential decay curve. There comes a time when i have to say its fine as it is and move on.

I find that sometimes the full idea is realized in a day or two days, and sometimes it's measured in months. I take as long as it takes. I did abandon one thing, I definitely recall, during a particularly uninspired period. But that's me, I am results-oriented and not at all a 'process artist' and I intend to make something I'm going to love living with. When I didn't know how to mix for shit, I still finished the thing. Wouldn't know how to advise, this is kind of a personality area I think. I'm driven, I'm not a well person really. :D

Something that might help is to breakdown the work into sections.
Something like...

timeline: sound design day, midi jamming day, midi editing / quantization day, arrangement day, mixdown day, mastering day

save your work as you go along on each step. and if you get tired of doing one type of work for that day, then quit and work on a different project which is at a different stage in the timeline.

I`m in a slump myself and have been for a long time...but enough about me.
To tell you truthfully, it could be any number of things tying you down.
For example, i`ll ask you some questions;
- have you ever completed something and you feel it`s 'good enough'?
- are you composing on the instrument you play best?
- are you depressed or in a down mood?
- do you spend time looking for that magic instrument sound that will inspire you?
- do you get fidgety sitting for some length of time?
- do you find yourself not wanting to go back to your last project for wanting to start something new?
- do you live alone?
- are you over 55?
- you don`t know anyone who is also interested in what you do, or who will give you support?
- you are a beginner at your instrument.

Any one of these can be trouble. Tell us more about you and what you think is going on. You have been very candid so far, but I believe we need to know more.
....................Don`t blame me for 'The Roots', I just live here. :x
