Edirol PCR50 worths the double price, much much better keys, better knobs and sliders. And %400 extended height Roland type modulation stick which makes it much useful.

461C keys feel really cheap

Could you explain more about this? I'm not sure what you mean.

I've been wondering about this style of pitch/mod wheel.

Older Roland style mod/pitch lever had a very short vertical movement space (when you push the lever forward). It was almost like an on off switch. Now it is much fine like the usual modulation bend, as the movement space is about 4 times longer now. But you can also control the pitch by moving it right and left which makes it practical.

This logic is much like Korg Triton workstations. Probably Triton's/Trinity's combined pitch/mod levers are the best. And I prefer them to a seperate pitch and modulation ring (a la Yamaha). And Edirol controllers' lever is close to this.

Aeros: Thanks. Do the keys make alot of noise? And you have not noticed ANY problems at all when controlling VSTi with the MK knobs (like jerky movements in the VSTi and such)?

gassle: Yeah i actually noticed that the edirol had an extended mod when i looked at a picture the other day. But it is twice as expensive (atleast where i'm ordering from). I simply can't afford it right now, and i need to order a midi controller on monday/tuesday. If the MK sucks i'll just have to save some money and get the edirol later.

BTW, someone mailed me the Sound On Sound review of MK-461C today. They did not mention anything at all about the keys for some reason. They only talked about the buttons and knobs, and how easy it was to controll VSTis with it and so on. The ONLY negative thing they had to say was that it did'nt have an extra volume slider above the pitch/mod wheels. So that review was not very helpful since they did'nt talk about the overall build quality of the keyboard..

I agree with some Harmony-Central reviews which tells: Older Edirol line (like PC300) are better then latest Evolution line, and PCR series are even better than older Edirol line. (about the keys). Much better, IMO.

461C's knobs and sliders are not bad but the keys. I'd save for Edirol instead. But if you're mainly after the knobs and sliders, 461 might be an OK deal.

i agree with the people praising edirol. i love my pcr80. the pcr's are definitely worth saving for over m-audio/evolution products. pay in installments, or something. you won't regret it.

You know , the 461 has also been reviewed in Music Tech and Computer Music recently and neither of them said much about the keys either. You'd think when reviewing a keyboard that the first thing to talk about would be the key action

As a recent owner of the Edirol PCR-30 (for laptop purposes), I will testify that their keyboards are a joy to play!

I compared it versus other keyboards in that range and the Edirol came out clearly on top. Programming the controller configuration via the included software is a breeze, too. I am 100% happy with my purchase.

Two things that might hold someone back from liking it is the Roland-style "wangbar" combination pitch-lever/modulation control (some people hate them: I can do either), and the knobs have a tactile detente position (which I like for "passive tweaks", preferring to do my "active tweaking" with sliders).

It is my assumption that larger PCR models carry the same quality, as they're almost identical in make save for the number of keys. The only reason I'm planning on buying a different brand at this point is that I'd like a hammer-action keyboard for my master controller (currently eyeing the M-Audio Keystation 88 ). Evolution boards just didn't feel right to me.
