It's simple.
WUP is an update subscription plan. Your plugins will work after the subscription is up but you won't get any updates after it expires.

That's still untrue. And has been discussed here many, many times.

If you have a version 9 license and WUP exprires, you still get all version 9 updates for free. I started using waves when version 9 was released and I can still install any update.

If your WUP is current by the time version 10 is released, you'll benefit from all version 10 updates.

Not untrue at all. If your WUP is expired you won't get V10 free no matter what version you have.. simple.

I didn't say you get version 10 without current WUP. Please read again.

And you were saying there were no free updates after WUP expires. And that is not true.

To OP: that's exactly the point. Pay for WUP when needed only.

You read again- it's a subscription plan for update coverage. After it expires you're no longer covered. I don't know much plainer it can be said..

So I just read thru this thread and I kinda got lost as to what was discovered where. I see correct answers and misunderstandings of others. So I will properly answer for anyone subsequently reading this thread. As mentioned before, the video on Waves website does a great job of explaining what is covered and what can be expected.

A.) The WUP price increased when the 2nd plugin was added because the additional days were prorated. 220 days to be exact. $1.40 for 220 days.
B.) Even if a plugin is outside of it's WUP coverage if it is Version 9 then you will get all the updates in version 9.
C.) When Version 10 releases, if you are outside of WUP, no upgrade.
D.) If you are outside of WUP and a plugin is added to the bundle, you will not receive the added plugin.
E.) WUP is not required to use the plugins. Even if you change OS and DAW, as long as that platform/format is covered in that version then you are good to go.
F.) When you WUP you receive a voucher for the amount you spent.
-- so simple strategy here that I recommend. If you WUP thru a 3rd party, like the one I use wavesuniverse, then although you paid less for the WUP, you get a voucher for the full amount. Do it during the Christmas/Holiday sale and Thank me Later
G.) The voucher can only be used for up to 25% of the cost of the plugin or 50% of a bundle price. The voucher does apply to sales prices. I recommend WUP during the holiday cause the voucher can be applied to Sale's Prices.
H.) The Abbey Road collection does not get plugins added to it bundle. Even if you own the bundle and your WUP is current. The plugins added can be purchased at a discount price.

With WUP, Waves also try to create an incentive to stay within the Waves eco system. For instance, if you want to sell a Waves plugin, it has to be covered by WUP.

The WUP price is calculated by the original retail price of the plugin. So if you grabbed say, Waves NLS on sale for $90,- and want to sell it after it's WUP coverage has expired, you are looking at a fee of a whopping $60,- just to be able to sell it. So you end up paying 90 + 60 = $150,- and if you're lucky you can sell it for $60,- (because everyone knows by now that they can just await the next Waves sales; which is weekly now; and grab it for $90,-)

So you spend $150,- and end up throwing $90,- in the trash after a second hand sale....

Well, I don't think Waves is at fault here. It's not their business to encourage second hand sales so I see no point in complaining about it. After all it's not your god given right to sell stuff second hand. And after all, Waves unlike most other companies, has quite liberal second hand sales policy: as long as the plugin is covered under WUP it can be transferred free of charge (except some bigger bundles) unlimited times. Most other companies do not allow second hand sales at all, make their plugins nfr after second hand sale or you have to pay a hefty fee every time (like 25-50$ with iLok).

I would add that if you upgrade something (e. g. several plugins into a bundle), you get WUP for the bundle included into the upgrade price. So sometimes an upgrade could be more interesting than WUP+voucher
