Proper emulation of the Prophet VS that sounds more like it should. And then various vintage digital synths from Yamaha (AN1X, SY99, etc.), Ensoniq (VFX, Fizmo), Roland (JD-990) and such. A few of those can still be found at fairly sane prices, but plugins would be so much more convenient than dealing with all that hardware and, to borrow a phrase from Patrick O'Hearn, "Cable Hell."

For nostalgia reasons I would say the Korg DS-8 or 707. Its approach to FM synthesis was very different -- simpler, more accessible, if a little more limited -- than Yamaha's, and it had this glorious unison mode.

Virus.

Sorry, this has been discussed to death but nothing in software sounds like it.

The recent thread about Yamaha An1x made me think that I may want something that sounds close to it.

My choice would be (I know it's a bit silly - but I am a sampler nerd after all) a Fairlight. If it could be done properly.

My favorite software synth (by a longshot, actually) nails some golden territory, but if I were to pick one bit of old hardware that I'd like to see done as an *exact* emulation in software:

Roland's Jupiter-8 8)

Aly James has been working on a Fairlight plugin for a while now. I think he's focusing on accurate sampling and playback rather that emulating everything in the Fairlight, but it should have the "sound".

Nothing. Best software doesn't limit itself to imitating hardware.

Thanks for the link. I remember reading about this years ago - so it's still under development? I like what he did with the vLinn - spot on really. So if he's trying to do the same with the Fairlight, I'm absolutely interested :)

The formant sequencing part of FS1r is an interesting concept that sounded unique, but it was poorly implemented.
Would like to see a VST take this concept further. Maybe already exists?

Also, I have yet to hear a convincing tube emulation in software. :phones:

Stating the obvious here, but UVIs sample based instruments are severely limited to the originals. That being said UVIs stuff do sound excellent and gives a sort of "best of" look into the instruments they are based on. I got the Emulation II - which is absolutely brilliant. Fantastic sounds. But it's still not an Emulator II.
