Best things and perks about Logic Pro 9

I really like Logic, but I find editing clips is a bit hit and miss. Lets say you've recorded 17 and a bit bars of audio and you want to trim it back to 16 whole bars. It'll often trim back to 16 and a tiny bit bars... which messes up looping of the audio and just generally results in messy workflow.

Agree, especially with ctrl+option+left click area selection zooming a.k.a zooming tool, than click to get back, it's almost instant, that's one of the features I absolutely love in Logic.

Unrelated to above, but other thing I quite like in Logic (even if some other DAW's can do it) is separating MIDI events by pitches, so handy, here's random video to show that:



IMHO, huge time saver for recording drum beat playing performance (or step sequencer one) in conjunction with Ultrabeat and than having it all there separated quickly in arrangement window&mixing channel strip for further tweaking, one can even set "drag&drop samples" kit in Ultrabeat to be the default one, than just drag&drop samples from library.

Screensets is another cool thing ( yes I know, other DAW's got them), personally I did #1 to be my main window, #2 almost full screen piano roll, #3 full screen mixer, #4 environment and etc, that for me is huge thing (especially on 13" Macbook), going from full screen piano roll to full screen mixer and back to arrangement in eye blinks.



Than marquee tool for slicing (command+double click on clip) in conjunction with zooming from above.

It would be amazing to have an option to load slices in Ultrabeat instead of EXS24 (than do MIDI splitting from above), still, it's not that much pain with little workaround, basically after slicing audio clip (with above method), do option+command+f (Convert Regions to New Audio Files) and than accessing them in event list and further dropping them inside of Ultrabeat and etc.

Another neat thing is this (ctrl+J):

basically you get separate clips from looped region or you can just do one you want wherever you want with pencil tool and option clicking, that's awesome.

There's probably more of this little things, this are from top of my head, Logic is full of them and all that little things add up and you got yourself really nice workflow, there's obvious advantages of some other DAW's, but there's not so obvious down the line that makes whole process from start to finish actually quite great, which than makes investing in deeper learning/studying Logic quite valuable on long run, this things makes Logic just more awesome than it is on the surface.

Probably Reaper can do everything and even more and you can squeeze it the way you need it or someone did script or something, there's probably some other DAW that do stuff just right or better or whatever, that's why I said golden middle, nothing to scream about, but still, plenty of everything in there for you to work efficient.

One big perk it has over X is you can resell it. I bought mine used a few years back but haven't used it much as Live became my primary DAW.

If you're running an up-to-date Mac you might be better looking into X as it's being actively developed and they've added a lot of new stuff to it, like Alchemy. I'll probably pick it up at some stage when I get back to using Logic more.

So you can resell it? That's another thing I was wondering about is legal ramifications if I wouldn't be buying it directly from Apple. I'd be buying it from a fellow producer.

I'd probably specifically be interested in using it for more professional sounding recording and mastering. Someone basically said it contains pretty good tools for recording, mixing, and mastering. Thoughts on that?

Nothing to scream home about really, just like plenty of other DAW's, you are better off just buying better plugins and using DAW you actually dig, Logic is sum of all pieces together, especially if you are planning to use it as your main DAW, 9 is old and unsupported anyways and you will need time to really get into it, just use DAW you are familiar with and buy few good plugins, Logic stock stuff is good for stock stuff, but not that good to get into it because of them

Better look at Pro Tools, Samplitude and Reaper.

Exactly, there's that famous "grass is always greener on the other side of the fence" too, sometimes it really is, but in most cases, it's just different and exciting at first, but than your grassland is what what you really need, you just didn't knew how to appreciate same thing all the time and keep doing few workarounds instead few dozen of others on the other side of the fence.

Don't get me wrong, one should explore and find himself in lesser evil, I think plenty of people are missing out on Logic big time because of Apple, Logic is awesome DAW and it offers so much for the buck, but it will not give you much if you are into something else.
