You know, I have noticed a few small issues, specifically when using the legato patches. I have been able to work around it though, fortunately. Spitfire is pretty good about patching their stuff too. Overall, it's a great library. I ended up going with Spitfire's BML stuff. I just left out the instruments that I already had other versions of (Clarinet, Oboe). Their low winds and low reeds sound really great.

Hi, I come late to this discussion, but I'm also late in adopting the Symphony Essentials (lite version of the Symphony Series).
After using them for a little, my idea is that the apparently odd choices are that these are not libraries intended for classical music, but for more epic/cinematic orchestral music. Bigger string and woodwind ensembles, aggressive violins, lord-of-the-ringhish flute, explosive brass instruments, automatic ostinato patterns: all this seems intended for that kind of music.
VSL also produced some instruments for more epic music, with bigger string (Appassionata) and brass (Epic Horns) ensembles, and a dedicated orchestra collection (Epic Orchestra).
In my view, NI succeed quite well in this goal, since the libraries are easy to use and of great effect.
