Have a look at Popfile.... a Bayesian spam filter which sits in between your pop mailbox and your mail program...

looks interesting, have you tried this WR, i'd be interested in hearing how much effort is really involved in training, and yes i've read the site just curious about first hand experiences, especially how many false positives you get during training. and i must admit to a wry smile when anyone drops the term bayesian in a product description (even a free one).

NS, one thing to try with falsified emails is sam spade, i used it to check the headers of bounced emails that had apparently been sent from one of my email accounts but which were really spoofed. funnily enough it happened right after visiting a microsoft support forum.

I've gotten emails from several kvr members, although I'm sure it wasn't deliberately from them.
but this spam shit is driving me crazy! it seems to have calmed a bit, although I still get quite a number. Still, for a while it was like 40 pieces of junk for every legitimate letter.
I'm going to check out some stuff mentioned here.

Things got mad here something like 2 months ago, before it was classic spam

then returned mails from strangers and a surge in worms : from 1 every 15 days to something like 10 per day !!

I had seen Putte in the mass of mails but didn't think it was him, just checked today because his name was seen every 2 days or so, contrary to the others.

Yup, I run it at home, and I was using it at work as well until they switched to an IMAP server. When IMAP support gets finished, I'll go back to using it, but in the meantime it seems to be much more effective than the installation of SpamAssassin which is what my work are currently using.

Been using it for at least a year, and its easy to train. In fact that little gets thru that I hardly ever go back to it. Once the initial burst of 'spam poetry' got handled, its done pretty well.

A way to solve it is to:

Have one email that is the main email. Then have other emails witch you go public with .. ie, here, other forums etc. Set those email to .. whats the word "vidarebefodra" in swedish. If you recieve a mail to a public one, that email will send it to your main one. If it gets flooded with crap, just terminate it and tell the ones who you wants to send to you to send to a new one.

This way you may keep your loved email for a long time

I noticed that the amount of spam seriously decreased after a while when I switched off automatic loading of images in html mails. I only load images manually when the mail looks seriously interesting (like Apple announcements... I do want 2560 x 1600 pixels...)

They use images in mails (which are loaded from their servers, with your "id" attached somehow) to verify your address. You open the mail, the image gets loaded, hence your mail address is valid, they send more spam. Still getting like 10-20 spam mails a day, but much less than it used to be (30-100).

?? May I ask why?

While (after reading their site) i'm now more confident that this does use a well formed bayesian approach (groan) i often think it's just one of those terms that gets bandied about. Also i've been in a few conferences and seen the flak fly between the baysians and the classical frequentists (i'm neutral btw). I do accept that in machine learning baysian techniques are incredibly useful, as long as prior probs are well founded, hence my question about how easy is it to teach. Much like neural nets, fuzzy logic etc if the technique isn't applied properly it's not going to help much. Just my oppinion.

Just so there's "closure" for me, I don't send spam, I don't eat spam, I do not eat spam cause it tastes like ham. I hate ham and avoid spam but hope the spoofer inhales a can...

and drops dead.

Sorry for those that think I might have spammed or tried to put viruses on their computer. Like everyone else I have so many security programs and anti trojans and so on, so forth that I appreciate how bad it would be to have a disruptive situation like a virus crashing the system.

If anyone gets a spoofed email please see if you have the full headers in hopes of possibly tracing it and PM me.

One idea that I do is to use both alpha and numerical characters in your email address. If you only use alpha characters, random spam generators have very little trouble eventually hitting your combination of letters.

But if alternate your name and your address/phone number/other number to form your email address, it becomes quite a bit harder for them to reach you. For example, you might use:

f9i23t12c116h@internet.com

I did this 6 months ago and my spam level
decreased dramatically-from 20 or so spams per day to 1 per month or less. It's a pain initially having to change and notify everyone, but that soon passes.

other info:
everyone using outlook or outlook express should go into tools/options/send and uncheck "automatically put people i reply to in my address book." if you actally want to keep an email address, right click on an email and choose "add sender to address book."

considering the number of virus's going around, i chose to be on the safe side and completely stopped using my address book a few years ago. i cleared out every entry. i didnt want to take the chance that some virus would sneek past my defences and try to send its self to all my business contacts, friends, and family.
