The songs reminds me a bit of the american goth-project Thanatos on their "an ambassey to Gaius" album. It has a nice desolate atmosphere and the emotion in & behind the song seem sincere.

thanks for posting it not only for sharing it with us but this post yielded lots of good tips for a lot of people here inlcuding me.

I'm pretty much rank amateur, but don't forget that your EQ and dynamics (I'm thinking mostly about volume/levels) don't necessarily need to be set in stone. The volume that's right for the instrument in question might be correct in one part of the song, but you may have to boost or cut in another part, for example.

When an instrument needs to duck out of the way, let it! As Mystahr (sp?) already mentioned, it's better to cut than to boost. This usually goes for levels as well as for EQ. Cut from the extraneous bits rather than boosting the 'important' bits.

My opinion the same expressed before me: a nice song

, effective instrumentation (not outstanding, but effective)

but a lousy mix (starting in the recording stage, I'm afraid)

Thanks one and all.
I've been off doing other stuff, thinking lots about all the advice I've been given. Anyway, I returned to browsing the forum - pleasantly surprised to find new messages on my first tune posting. Haven't done much to the mix yet, as Jax says some of the trouble lies in the recording. I'd love to post a revamp of it but that's some way off - considering all its ailments, I'd be inclined to start afresh. Perhaps you'll let me post something else, I've been applying the advice elsewhere.
Here's to people who just do IT!

i think its smart to start of with telephone or radio preset eq-ed cymbals so people put it louder before the flutes come in !

and i find the arangement fabulously floydishly marvelous ...or so
