Anything better than Audacity?

Audacity doesn't support high-DPI scaling.

I've always found it's audio editing pretty lousy, personally wouldn't dream of using it for dedicated audio editing jobs. Great for composition, just not for this task IMO.RichieWitch wrote:Why not Tracktion 5? It's a great full-featured DAW and it's free.

Free for Mac? I think beside Audacity the best you can get is ocenaudio or Wavepad.
Whoever wants music instead of noise, joy instead of pleasure, soul instead of gold, creative work instead of business, passion instead of foolery, finds no home in this trivial world of ours.

I often clean noise from field recordings; the RX workflow gives a lot of detailed control, its fun, and you can do much more, eg filter harmonics. Some people like the new Acustica 7, now in Mac.

I use Audacity too, but ocenaudio just looks and feels more like a commercial audio editor.
I think the 2 compliment each other well actually.

Ocenaudio is quite nice. Maybe not as deep as Audacity but for basic editing it's more pleasing for the eye.

I would recommend trying Wavelab 9 LE which you can get in German kiosks (you are German, right?) for 14,90 € with Keys Magazin Special Edition. I don't think it has the Cleaning Effects (Denoise, Declick) of the advanced Wavelab versions, but it supports VST plugins.martinjuenke wrote:Wonder if it is worth to go beyond Audacity given the fact that it's free. Should I pay for something else? Why? Is there anything important not covered by Audacity?
My main area of usage is cleaning up self made field recordings...

Here is the manual

You could then use the plugin ReaFIR from the Reaplugs VST collection. It has great functionality for denoising and such, while Wavelab gives you all the nice features of editing audio.

I just bought Soundforge Pro Mac in a bundle with iZotope RX Elements and Ozone Elements. Sounds really promising. Especially the RMS normalisation in Soundforge and Ozone Mastering finish brought instant improvements when testing some tracks of mine. I was really surprised.
But thanks to you all for your recommendations...

I see the OP already got Soundforge but just for future reference and others who stumble across this thread check out Accoustica. It's Mac/Win crossplatform and the premium version comes with audio restoration suite

Would Reaper offer enough editing capability? It's really affordable and powerful.
For cleaning up field recordings, Izotope RX 6 is pretty amazing. The Elements version is about $100.
(Edit: I see you got a setup that's made improvements to your workflow. Awesome! Might want to check out Reaper anyway.)
