OMG I just read that speaker thread. Skipped it the first time 'round, now I know why. I do like egg shaped things, however.
Link to cool animations. http://www.acs.psu.edu/drussell/Demos/B ... iston.html Look at the 3 fancy animated gifs. Now put your face right in front of that animated gif. No, I don't mean literally put your nose up against your monitor. Imagine your face is right in the middle of the sound wave. Put it right up against the source of the sound waves, and keep in mind your ears are pointing 90deg away from the sound source. You can imagine how your face physically blocking the sound waves would affect the sound. The wave radius gets smaller as the frequency goes up; the closer your face is to the sound source the less sound wave will make it to your ears. Some of the energy will just be transferred right through your cranium, so depending on how loud the source is and the frequency of the sound waves, you'll get various colorations there too. This is why you have ear lobes. They're designed to catch sound waves, and secondarily to hang shiny objects from. Maybe you just have really small ear lobes?
So two important facts we've learned here. 1.) Sound travels in waves. 2.) Ear lobes catch sound waves.

It sounds to me like the frequencies on your hard drive have become stale due to aging, just get yourself some new ones

It's totally logical that this happens, but it's about reference. Reference is your chi.

If you can barely hear something, what is your reflex?
Answer: turn your ear towards it.
Because then the sound is shooting directly into the hearing canal instead of first reflecting on your ear lobe. And it is 10 cm closer.
Nb: never mind the trolls. They have forgotten what it is like to become aware and discover things you always have taken for granted.
