As such, yes the OP has an accent (as we all do) but I'm sure he'd prefer to know how to say a word in the way that (nearly) everyone else says it.

But that was the point of Jace's post. Nearly everyone doesnt say it with the intrusive r. The OP's own accent is effectively as valid as the intrusive r you're recommending.

That's a fair point about my intrusive r compared to without the intrusive r.
But wouldn't (to quote myself above) ''nearly everyone'' say 'sawtooth' as either one of these two closely sounding versions (to use the IPA):

/sɔ:tu:θ/ or /sɔ:rtu:θ/

I was surprised by the OP's vowel pronunciation:

/saʊtu:θ/

How do you each pronounce the word sawtooth, with reference to the IPA system?


NB, some vowel sounds on that IPA chart are not exact and there may even be some vowel sounds which are inadequately covered by the IPA, as (for example) the word 'poor' can have a very different pronunciation in parts of Wales I lived in compared to other parts of the UK.
However, the OP's speech is the first time I've ever heard sawtooth pronounced as:
/saʊtu:θ/
Does anyone else here pronounce sawtooth as /saʊtu:θ/ ?

OP is obviously non-L1 speaker of English so hey, whatever floats his barco.

[/'sɔ:rtu:θ/ , to me, just says somebody doesn't know how to write using the script or they're from Texas, my Texan cousins used to say 'mother' while pronouncing the 'r' at the end, was bizarre for me to hear that]

Edit: actually Somerset would be a bit [/'sɔ:rtu:θ/ too, wouldn't it.
