hmm...If you're currently on Cubase 5 and have some money to spend and want a sequencer with a similar feature set ("I'd like to have all the features of cubase at least"), why not just grab Cubase SX?
Seems a logical step to take.

Sonar 3 gets my vote (unless you're a Mac guy, then Logic Pro 6 is probably the best choice). Sonar is great with audio and midi, and is great for loop-based or composition based. It's a great all-around sequencer that can do what all the others can do, but priced competitively.

I hear a lot of good stuff about Orion, and I wonder if it can go head to head againt Sonar?

When I talk about the "toyish" look in Tracktion I don't mean the overall look, but details like the output and plugin routing (looks messy to me), the "filter" session (everything is a filter? Effects and synths?) etc. I reckon it can turn into a great host once this details be fixed, the midi editor becomes usable (for me it isn't at this moment); ah, and a midi loop pool would be nice; with these features I would move to Tracktion right away :!:

For those who don't mind with these "details" (i.e. don't work the same way I do) Tracktion is a good choice, no doubt
:)

Can't argue about the "filter" thing. I still call'em plugins. ;)

As far as the routing, though-- it couldn't be neater... :!: I haven't a clue what you could possibly mean by "messy", as both the regular and the "rack filters" methods are as plain and simple as day.

One man's mess is another man's.. er.. not mess! ;)

Sonar is an excellent recommendation. I've always been thrown by the lack of native VST support without the (included) wrapper, as I can't figure out why they would do it that way when VST is open...? But the rest of the package looks superb.

Sonar is a really complete package. If I were to switch from Tracktion it would probably be to Sonar or Live. Then again both Sonar and Live cost atleast 5 times as much as Tracktion .

If you are using cubase, then sounds to me like you want in depth features. You mentioned you combined a lot of audio and midi, well, I use both fl studio (on a pc) and logic pro 6, (mac) they are totally different. But, for the money, Logic is much better for what I want to do. I have heard good things about sonar if you only have a pc, and like was mentioned, an upgrade to cubase might be a good idea too. I just think that you would find something too cheap would be quite limiting after being used to cubase. Just a thought.

Also, if you are a student, you can get GREAT academic pricing deals on academicsuperstore.com, or at other retailers on the internet.

Price isn't always a statement on feature-set or depth. It's usually a reflection of marketing, development and staffing costs, and supply and demand.

I admit, Tracktion's MIDI is less than desirable in my opinion; however it'd be a mistake to think it completely lacks depth.

And another program for less than the price of a night at the pub is Energy XT, which I'm sure most would agree is wealthy in features and depth.

-Don't get me wrong, though-- I think both the Sonar and Cubase upgrade options are excellent, and the reasons given are right on the money.

Sonar 3: The most complete package out of all of them. Sonar does everything well! More Intuitive than Cubase, but also gets clumsy to work with at times.

Acid 4 with EnergyXT: For recording and editing audio, there is nothig faster than Acid in my opinion. When you run EnergyXT inside Acid and use it to route your Acid MIDI tracks, there's virtually nothing you can't do. I use this set up a lot!

Podium: To the person that called Podium a mess, you really need to take a closer look at it. Podium is a fabulous program. Very few bugs and as soon as Frits adds the Bussing Matrix for routing effects, watch out! Podium is a player already, add the bussing matrix and it may quickly become the best one stop solution out there. I've never seen a cooler more intuitive set up for writing Continuous Controller Data to a tracks. All Controller Data is written on the main screen and can be instantly edited. Podium generally gives you one way, the right way to perform a function. Instead of giving the user 4 different ways to do the same thing. That so called flexibilty causes nothing but clutter. As soon as Podium gets the bussing matrix implemented, which should be in the next month or two, it will become my top audio/MIDI solution. Podium Rocks!

Currently I'm using a combination of Ableton Live and EnergyXT. Both are excellent programs and both handle the things you want.

I'd highly recommend these two - Remember... live 4 will introduce VSTi's and a much more complex audio routing system.

It is now a fully fledged sequencer, and kicks Cubases's arse!

i'm looking too for an audio sequencer
i'd like it free (i like tracktion and it's not very expensive, but it is'nt free !)
something like sonic foundry's acid, but ina VST format (Acid is Dx)
Kristal doesn't seems to be able to loop samples or to stretch audio files, so it is not really interesting...
what could i use ??

There are a lot of good sequencers out there--Cubase SX2, Logic Pro (Mac only/AU), Digital Performer, Sonar and Live 4 on the highend with Tracktion a less expensive and fewer features alternative for a fraction of the cost. What determines "professional" however is the user not the product. You could make very amaateurish use of Logic or Cubase if you choose and very professional use Tracktion on the other end. If you're using Cubase now, check out SX2 first. Not using a feature is better than finding that you need it down the line and you don't have it. Think quality first, price second IMHO.

Theres a really cheap version of Acid called Screenblast. But it doesnt support VST. EXT is 39 bux and well worth it. But it doesnt have looping abilities like Acid. Tracktion is 80 bux and it ROX! No looping like Acid tho. If you get a Mac you can have Garageband which has looping abilities like Acid (not as good really :P ) but it doesnt support VST's. It kinda looks like you're gonna have to compromise with one of these.

thanx for your comments !
i looked a little on Kvr, and thought that Massiva was nice, but i can't find it?
has it been replaced by EnergyXT ?
i downloaded XT demo, and it rocks, but it is not as easy as Acid to get a result ! !
Tracktion is nice, i think i will have to use tracktion.. !
but it's as pity, if only something like Kristal wwas looping or stretching audio files, it would really rock and mash the place up ! !

Yup.

i'm looking for an audio and vst sequenceur, which can repeat many times the same file, and also slice very small parts of a sample, so not a pattern-only-sequencer, and not a classic sequencer whitout a precise grid synchronisation...
it seems hard to get something which suits me fine... !
