It also essentially eliminates the VST track count limitation.

If you look here:

There is a preview video. Might be worth a watch.
I agree. The chord track is already there in V8 but it's much more flexible in the forthcoming V9. There's a large selection of common progressions built-in to get you started. It might be worth waiting until this is released as there should be a trial available soon after?

Cubase Elements sounds like what you're looking for. If you ever feel like you need something more advanced, you can just upgrade to any future version of Cubase Artist or Pro. The price to upgrade to these versions doesn't increase regardless of which version of Cubase Elements you have, it's always the same.

Some older version of Tracktion that is free , or Waveform , Reaper , Podium or Mulab . Or a used license of older version of Ableton Live , Bitwig , or StudioOne .

I'm using Elements myself. You mentioned you don't like track limits, so check if it's enough for you. Also it only has 8 inserts (6 pre fader, 2 post fader). Artist and pro has 16, and you could modify how many are pre and post. It also lacked sidechain. If those aren't limiting to you (they aren't, for me), then by any means, get it.

Tracktion waveform looks good, too.

Btw, I don't know for sure, but I believe studio one artist that comes with Presonus interfaces do have VST support. It's because they include "studio magic suite" which are 3rd party VST plugins.

I have a different opinion than most here! I don't recommend Cubase Elements if you don't have the intention to upgrade later.

Unless, something has changed, Elements has limitations of 24 VST tracks (not few but still a limitation) and no midi tools (they are fantastic tools!) and also no sidechaining as mentioned before. It also lacks in contents (no Retrologue and Padshop synths, which are excellent synths). I don't know exactly what is missing in drums section though.

There are some options but mostly over $100 a little bit. So, if I were you, I would save just a little bit more and then either:

- Reaper + Scaler = $110
Reaper is a great DAW. You don't need to delve into all the options. Just configure the things you need. Midi is excellent and if you just record and edit some notes here and there, I think it is just fine! It also has the best CPU management and has tons of free Pro tutorials. Scaler I don't have, but I read it is an excellent tool for Scales and chords progressions ..etc.

- Studio One v3 Pro from the 2nd hand market here in KVR: $130 ~ $150 (I sold mine for $130). This is a great and almost the same price of Artist + VST/ReWire Addon if bought from their shop.

- Cubase Artist 9 (or above) from the 2nd hand market: I think I saw it once for $150. This is a fantastic one. It has most of the Pro features (Retrologue and Padshop synths, Midi tools, ..etc) it only lacks some effects, score editor and some advanced features.

- Live 9 Standard from the 2nd hand market: This is difficult to fine for $150 but possible. This has no limitations in tracks and has fantastic tools like the EQ and the Glue compressor. It has also a very good drums library (like Battery).

- Bitwig 1 from the 2nd hand market. I saw this for $75 I think. It's still a great DAW with a great workflow. I'm not sure if it is a good investment, but I think you can always upgrade to the current version if needed.

- FL Studio Producer: This can be obtained in the discounts for $130. Great DAW and it is getting better with time. Can't beat the investment here! Free updates for life. It has great effects and tools and comes with Sytrus and Maximus :)

- Sonar (this is ... oh wait!) :hihi:
Using: Cubase Pro 15, Bitwig 5, Tascam US-4x4HR, MODX6, DM12D, LaunchKey 49, Yamaha guitar(Pacifica 612v) and bass (BB234) and some virtual instruments and synths.

If you are on a Mac... Logic is a remarkable deal! It's $200 initially, so double your price, but it is not a cut down version, no arbitrary limitations and you can expect some years of updates for free... It has enough quality synths and FX that you would not need to buy anything in addition.

This is out of the question IMO! I mean it would be the obvious choice ;)

But Macs do come with Garage Band, right? I have it for free in my iPad and I suppose it comes free with any Mac. It also supports AU plugins right? If that the case then it is really a good cut down version of Logic (judging from my iPad version).

Cubase Elements can load up to 40 VST instruments if you combine Instrument Racks and Instrument Tracks. Multi-timbral plugins can be used with both. That's plenty, specially for a casual user.

Second hand Live 8 standard?

Thanks for replies and new options.

Yesterday I watched a few videos about Cubase Chord tracks - it seems definitely very useful feature for me and it's nice to have it built into DAW to avoid hunting for third-party plugins.

But I'll keep an eye on KVR and other deals to see if I can get some higher edition of DAW, thanks for the hint.

I have tried Ableton Live (Lite editions are bundled with almost every hardware out there; I wish they bundled Cubase or Studio One or Bitwig more often instead of Lite) and FL Studio but they are slightly too "exotic" for me and they put accents on other kinds of workflows which do not suit my approach well.
