samsung ?? no more???

I wasn't aware Samsung made drives at all. A LOT of companies OEM from other makers and stick their name on the product, and this applies to *ALL* markets, not just computers. If I am wrong on this, let me know, please.

Well, we get samsung drives (not the OEM ones) here.. and they are rather popular. THe company advertises regularly on all local computer magazines. Im using one myself : SAMSUNG SV2042H
It's an old 20GB on which i have the OS running.

The mb bios and drivers must also support udma100+.

Unfortunately, I do a lot of tech work and I see A LOT of drives physically fail. The job has made me super-paranoid!!!

With a little research, it does look like they're making drives now. I'm wondering if they're just pushed in other parts of the world more than in the States? Doing searches on a specific model number on their website came up with sites for India and Australia, which makes me wonder.

I deal with failed hard drives almost daily, but my paranoia isn't up. Main reason is think about how many hundreds are being used that are working fine. Then again, I deal with installations with storage in the terabytes, so the more drives you have, the more likely there is to be a failure. Always remember, you never hear from the people that their equipment is working fine, only the one's that fail. Hard to make a judgement call with the issue so biased to one side.

They have been making drives for a while. My previous system drive was a 800MB model.
My system was dual boot, too. Unbelievable.

I remember having a 2GB samsung drive

There are few samsung hard drive, and the one I got was out the day I installed it. Noises, "tak tak", like those described here.
You should always have SMART enabled, because it is more safe.
WD drives are very good, better than Hitachi's. One of the hint of the quality of a HD is the waranty time. One year is a cheap product, that is likely to fail in the 2 years. 3 years is far better, and WD sells a lot of them. Perhaps a little noisier, but far better in peformance et liability. Prefer 8Mb versions.

New problems...i working on a mixdown and my machine stalls... i have to reboot. After some time, machine hangs again.. reboot. This time the soundcard is emitting a hung arpegiated note (tak tak tak tak tak, say bout 300 BPM, know what i mean ? )

on one of these reboots the machine stalls on the boot page while trying to detect any IDE channels....

i have removed the maxtor disk and given it back for replacement.

as of now :

Primary master : Samsung 20GM

Secondary master : WD 80GB 7200RPM
Secondary slave : CD Writer LG52X

whats up ppl.. im changing cables tommorow.

Remove one drive at a time... pain in the butt if it doesn't actually TELL you what's wrong. Start with the CDRom.
