I've been using my ancient iPad2 with an equally ancient IK Multimedia iRig for years. I use the iPad as a MIDI strum interface and it stays charged as well. The only restriction is that it won't tolerate USB extension cables. Has iPad technology gone backwards in recent years or do I misunderstand the requirement?

I actually missed this thread.
Why would you want IDAM to work through the CCK, when you connect to the Mac direct it powers the Ipad anyway, the CCK offers no advantage in this case at all.
If you wish to use the CCK during IDAM for some reason, you need to use a USB hub, the hub must be hosted by the Mac and the iPad a peripheral on the HUB via the CCK.
Common sense really when you add it up.

Everything the OP wants to do can be done with a CCK, hub is either or add on.

Remember if you are getting a hub for use with iPad, get yourself a nice 6 ports or more, powered, and avoid the little crappy un powered or underpowered ones.
Some self powered USB hardware still needs a fully powered USB bus to be recognised.
