This is good!

I held off for years going the Cakewalk route for my main DAW, mainly because of a bad experience with some version of Sonar a while ago... and then when Gibson's Cakewalk went belly-up, I thought "whew" as I had nearly pulled the plug and bought it..

Now it is nice that BandLab is offering it for free, so I guess I can try Cake now, no risk. Have a BandLab account as they contacted me as I own Z3TA+ 2 (but never use it).

So who says you can't have your Cakewalk and eat it too? :hyper:

:tu:

Edit - main download is 700 MB, optional instruments download another 900 MB

Finally Sonar is being sold for what it's actually worth.

Well, we all don't work for free either, do we?

The "catch" in this case could be simply to get a lot of new customers, or, as has been pointed, stop people from hopping on to other DAW's. Might be a tad too late for that though. And, the future of Cakewalk as it is also seems a bit unclear.
It depends on how many people actually have moved on to New Daws. I'm guessing TONS of people jumped on those Crossgrades to the Greener Pastures of Studio One and Cubase respectfully, but I'm guessing some stuck around.
I am fully expecting money to become involved because like you said, working isin't free, its not like Bandlab's employees are just sitting around coding all day for nothing. I think its HOW this money comes involved that interests me.
The post above this is likely bait, viewer discretion is advised.

My Only question is if it is Desperation then why would Bandlab buy Cakewalk in the first place. I don't know the specifics of the deal but I don't think Gibson gave it away for Peanuts, I think it was a definite Investment.

There Has to be some greater plan in place, Like one that Ties into Bandlab as a service.

Blackmagic design is another company that gives away high-end software for free. You can get Davinci Resolve and Fusion, very capable and high end versions of colour graders and compositors for free. They do have paid versions which add features that would only be of interest to bigger studios I guess. They also have their camera line for sale.

My point is that I am sure there is a logic in giving away (what some people consider) decent software for free. Maybe it is goodwill, maybe it is free advertising.

Either way, Blackmagic design do it, and they do it very well, so I am sure there is a logic and a plan behind BandLab's giving Cakewalk away for free.

Anyway, I'm off to try a slice of my new cake with a coffee.

Traktion gives away older versions of their DAW (uncrippled AFAIK).
A well-behaved signature.

Neither. It's just marketing. The goals will be to retain the existing userbase, and grow it by letting people use it for free, by which time when the next update comes around, there should be more people who are Cakewalk users to buy the next upgrade (or more people to monetise in other ways...)

Cool. I installed it and it's license says it's valid for 6 months, through 10/3/18. Wonder what happens then?

Good question... the wording of the statement mentions quality pro tools for everyone so it *sounds* like they intend keeping the core app free but... who knows... (well, they do obviously :))

Does this version have Melodyne ARA integration retained?
