I know this thread is closing in on a year old but I wanted to resurrect it and see if you found any long-term solutions to your problem.

I'm dealing with the same issue with a MPK249 on a MacBook Pro. My conclusions have been similar to yours. It looks like the MPK simply does not like USB 3.0 ports. It's happy to receive power from the port but does not want to send MIDI data. I tried using a power supply for the MPK and that didn't work either.

My only workaround at the moment is to use a USB 2.0 hub plugged into my USB 3.0 slot. This seems very silly to me and a little annoying. I've also found that using a USB 2.0 extension with an "active repeater" solves the problem as well.

It's all so strange. I've done a bunch of research on USB 3.0 vs. 2.0 and the consensus is that it's seemingly random what USB 2.0 devices won't communicate correctly with 3.0 slots.

I also own the MPK's little brother, the MPK mini and it has had no issues whatsoever with the 3.0 slots. Go figure.
