+1 on the Suite - unlike several above, I'm using it's instruments almost daily
Operator is a f**king monster by itself, Analog for me; has terrific sounding pads and keys, Collision - some very interesting plucks & bass tones, Sampler is incredibly powerful. I think it's distracting(and expensive) to chase all the latest VST third-party instruments: there are a million sounds to be created with the Suite instruments(and layers of them).
I'm not certain what EFX are not included with the Standard version but the v.10 revisions to the EFX sound amazing. I'm using fewer and fewer of my third-party plugs every day, save the Valhalla verbs and CamelSpace.
With regard to MAX - I'm primarily using the MIDI implementations from Ableton and a couple of outside vendors to drive/control the instruments. Not so much of the MAX EFX or instruments right now but maybe one day I'll stumble across something inspiring there. There is however, a terrific convolution 'verb in the MAX pack of v.10
best of luck

I would go for suite, the new wavetable synth is quite good, you have everything in the package to start and make music, just commit to it.

take your time. wait for a sale, upgrade to standard.spendthrift2 wrote:You've seen the side by side comparison, now you're ready to decide. That's where I am, and I'm wondering what your thoughts are on Standard vs. Suite. Several people have mentioned Suite. I don't know that I'll use Max4Live or some of the other features in Suite, so I'm leaning toward hanging onto that extra $200 that it would cost, with an educational discount of course.![]()
So which one should I get if I buy? I already have an Live Intro 8 license, and I'm nearing the end of my 30 day free trial of Live 10 Suite.
take your time again, wait for a sale, upgrade to suite.
take your time once more and listen thru all the library presets to get an impression. and watch some basic tutorial vids about it. its worth the time you will save to learn handling the daw.
i saved some money on waiting for the sales and it was fully worth it. i upgraded even to live10 earlier than planned.
imo, if you have a decent homestudio equipment, ableton live suite is a rocksolid producer daw and performance tool, quality of sound is top. handling has its little flaws compared to others, but nothing to make a big fuss about it.
i especially like the midi effects, the simpler sampler, the capture function, tension and collision synths and the incredible granulator II synth. the given libraries are really good sounding.
the new wavetable synth is very good. you get tons of drumkit presets, samples, clips with the suite version.

I have Suite 9, but upgrade cost for 10 is too steep for me.

ok
you need to check whether you can upgrade from standard edu to suite edu
because you can't upgrade 9 edu to 10 edu...
so the difference in price is a one off deal

For me, Suite is worth it just for the +10 extra instruments, +10 extra audio effects, +8 extra MIDI effects and +60GB of sound packs. Max4Live is a (huuuuuugeee....) cherry on top.
But if one doesn't feel limited with what they now have in Standards, especially if they're mainly using 3rd party VSTs and/or lots of external hardware, then it might not make sense to upgrade.

if you are already a convert to Ableton then this is a pretty ok update. the Waveform synth is a cool addition and there are a host of small improvements but for me, it still does not seem like a whole number update. i guess there must be a limit to the ability to inovate, so it's all about refinement of existing functions. it is still a bit to expensive also... but i guess they have a huge chunk of the market... so i doubt they will care about that..
still a great DAW i think..

I think you're in wrong topic - this isn't about upgrading from 9 to 10, but from Standard to Suiteinkwarp wrote:if you are already a convert to Ableton then this is a pretty ok update. the Waveform synth is a cool addition and there are a host of small improvements but for me, it still does not seem like a whole number update.
