I'm just about to get a new box with some serious firepower.

For the first time ever I'm a bit worried logic won't be able to keep up with all the latest gadgets I plan to use with it... And FLC is a must to me very soon.

Cubase SX 2 is tempting me quite a lot.

Post

I'm still happily producing with Logic 5.5.1 PC. I was almost stopped dead in my tracks by the infamous 1 Gig Out of Memory Error, but found a workaround. I plan to use it for another 6 months or so until SX 3.1 comes out - then I'll get the 4-way Opteron monster.

I was disgusted by Steve Jobs behaviour and have developed a knee-jerk gag reaction whenever I see anything 'Apple'. I still have an irrational but extreme hatred of the iPod - but have made my peace with this new-found idiosyncracy.

Funny - as I was always looking forward to the day I was going to move to a Mac. It's certainly a long and lingering farewell to Logic - but I could never help justify Jobs' foul tactics.

You just have to keep on keepin' on...

What's that? It might be "infamous" but it's news to me. I'm just about to move to a 2 GIG DDR2 RAM machine so if that causes problems with Logic I need to know - what is the solution?

Hi

Been using (on PC)logic 5.5 and previous versions before that, but I have recently become increasingly frustrated with the program - compatability issues with vst's, toooo many crashes for a variety of reasons, the enviroment has always irritated me, some older songs not loading blah, blah and blah!

I recently purchased Reason 2.5 and Ableton Live4 - to be honest they both have limitations but I need a jolt and have found it difficult but exciting learning new ways of working.

So Logic is likely to be relegated and ultimately uninstalled although I do miss that nice big piano roll page!

I would not recommend anyone 'starting out' to touch the PC version - for numerous reasons.

Flipper.

Seems to be abbreviation riddle day today... :? Eeer, what is FLC please? :help:

Hi Amused,

I detailed the fix in a post to KVR.

http://www.kvr-vst.com/forum/viewtopic. ... 698#584698

I thought at the time that the fix worked for 2 Gig too, but the error reoccured. My system seems to work smoothly with MAXMEM set to 1535 (1 meg less than 1.5 Gig) - but do experiment.

Best of luck

Thanks - but dammit - if I have to fiddle about with ini setting just to get Logic working with 2 gig RAM wtf - bloody bloody Steve Jobs (assorted swear words.....)

Post

what is FLC please?
full latency compensation.

sorry about that.

was a bit tired and created another stupid abbreviation. thought I had seen it in use somewhere though? maybe it was something else.

I've been working with Logic since 1994 and switched from Mac to PC in 1999 .It still cuts it as far as I'm concerned and and my workflow is streamlined. There are far more positives than negatives including a great suite of FX plug-ins and flexible midi editing .Screensets and key commands are a crucial part of the Logic philosophy and I love building my custom mixer setups and the sheer flexibilty that allows . Also it very rarely crashes on my system.Yes the 1 gig limitation can be a pain ( there are work-arounds) and it caused my friend to switch to Nuendo. When my current project is finished I have 2 choices:
1.buy a G5 2.5 and do the switch or
2. Crossgrade to Samplitude V8 which as far as I'm concerned is the only real contender to replace Logic on the PC especially with the new V8 drum editor which is similar to the Hyper Editor in Logic .I will await the V8 demo due in September hopefully I will make my decision based on that. When all is said and done I could continue making music with my current setup for many years and I have far more tools at my disposal than I could ever have dreamed of 20yrs ago.

just so you know, the actual problem is that with more than 1 gig of ram logic gives an ot of memory error when trying to merge audiofiles with the "glue" tool or digital mixdown function. it surely was a
PITA.
on mac, you can have even 8 gig installed and it's no problem, but logic can only use 2 in total. so really it makes sense in a new g5 to have 3gig, and logic will get a full 2 to itself
So am I going to be able to use it at all on my new PC? I have now acquired Tracktion and was planning to use that with my Creamware card as my main host but I did still want to be able to acess the Logic instruments as there are no equivelents to most of them - that was one of the reasons for getting a Creamware card as I can feed the sounds from Logic into the Scope mixer directly.

Hi,

I just want to throw my thoughts here...

I WAS a Logic User guy and was stuck to version 5 on XP. But I gave up. Why ?

- Very bad Rewire support. I use Reason a lot and when I was rewiring it tere were a fat latency. (but only with Logic... I have a great sound card, an RME Multiface).
- Bug with some VSTi.
- Bouncing tracks took a hell of a time.
- VST organization folders was hell. Even if you organized them in folders, it shows up all messed up. I am an organized guy and this was a hell for me...

So I finally manage to sell it to someone. It was the best moment to sell it when the new Logic 6 Bundle came out. I sold it to a Mac guy that crossgrade it.

I then tried Cubase SL for a while. But then again I did not get into it. Mainly because of the way audio and midi routing is working. I hate to have hundreds of windows opened.

And also I am bored to have to stick to a way of making music that come from a software. I want to decide how I want to work...

Now I work with these 2 hosts and for me it is the haven of flexibility: Ableton Live 4 for playing with loops, effects and live recording, and EnergyXT in Live as a Vsti for all my instruments routing or any effect routing experiment. Now I feel it is FUN to make musik. I don't waste time to understand how the seuqencer is working, i feel it is more intuitive.

The only thing is the delay compasation that is missing in my setup... but I expect Ableton to come with this feature pretty soon.

Cheers,

Yannick

Is it just me or is there an actual pattern evolving here?

Generally when I'm reading through posts on this site, the occasional Logic post crops up and it gets praised by what appears to be people who are actual musicians and producers that are worth their salt.

Then it gets slammed by what appears to be "bedroom DJs" and other musical butchers. Sometimes, I wonder about the actual musical ability of these people so I'll have a quick blast of their demos only to find that, in most cases, there is total dissonance and a lack of musical knowledge.

A short while back, I was recording a track for a client and he used a term which almost made me feel like jumping off something relatively high.

"can you make it more banginger?"

Translated, that means "can you make it bang more?"

Even though I realised straight away what he was trying to say, I reached for the Hollywood Edge SFX library for some gunshots, thunderclaps and other bangs of some description.

Somebody tell me there is hope for these people... please? :help:

Worrying!
