Strange, its my understanding steinberg uses a lot of AMD machines......

P4's are certainly much better though... But I guess since this is kvr, the whole price thing means a hell of a lot more....

Well Ive got a Pentium 4 3.2 Extreme Edition and it gets about 4500 partials in Virsyn Cube without glitches. My Athlon 3200XP could only get up to about 2000. Although I think this plugin is optimized for SSE2. If you got the cash, I say get an Athlon FX, they seem to be the fastest CPUs available judging by various benchmarks Ive seen elsewhere.

Hmm I wouldn't say that:

AMD Athlon 64 FX 53 Socket 939 - € 847.90
Intel Pentium 4 3.4 GHz Extreme Edition - € 982.00

These are definately competitors, with the FX 53 having slightly the performance advantage overall.

Or are prices different in the US?

Screw the EE procs, drop down to the same speed procs without the extra cache, and the AMD is more expensive. Extra on-die cache is nice, but isn't always helpful in all situations either. The AMD 939 from what I've seen is out performing the new Prescott 3.6Ghz I think it was, but the 3.6 was cheaper by $100. So frickin' hard to compare apples to apples though.

If compared stuff below the top notch......P4's are actually just as cheap near the high end... Performance tho is a different thing

either way Id choose the platform depending on what you wish to do with it. and certainly NOT buy top of the line. In 6 months itll be selling for 1/3 of the price now. 3rd gen is always the place to be.

Thats a completely illogical comparison. The Athlon64 3500 is cheaper than a standard P4 3.4

by about 15$ if you shop well for both. And the p4 3.4 performs much better in that case.

Pricewatch doesnt offer the best prices.... They offer the best prices from a select set of dealers.

My local dealer has the p4 3.4 for 356$ before tax.

Well, the situation he describes is similar to Europe, having the P4 3.4 GHz more expensive than the Athlon 64 3500+. At your local dealer the Athlon 64 3500+ isn't cheaper? It can be well be that they didn't yet calculated the recent price drops of Athlon 64 processors.

Oh the athlon is 341 elsehwere. The dealer I work with specializes in intel and ATI products... their AMD prices are a little less than stellar.

All being well and good I should be getting Athlon XP 3000+ next month. I had to buy a new motherboard recently as my old one broke and I coulden't boot. I didn't want to delve into the 64bit arena just yet as a lot could happen in the future regards that. I was underwhelmed when nVidia made a demo for 64bit processors and only a 27% increase was the result:

I know its not really relevant in the world of DAW's but it gives some indication of what speed increases the Athlon 64's will give when 64bit code is used...not that much really when you consider what 64bit means and all the hype that has been surrounding it. Plus Intel must have somthing up their sleeves as regard consumer 64bit processors, even though they have stated that there is no need for them at this time.

I think the next few years could be the make or break for both AMD and Intel.

Any major differences between Pentium/AMD nowadays?
