I wonder what he's doing with that honking big MPC then.

oh right, so you're right and anyone who disagrees is wrong? Thanks for clearing that up...

I get the feeling the definition of "instrument" is a little narrow here.
A trumpet is an instrument, so is a piano, a bag of nails, vocal chords, an oil drum, a guitar, a rusty hinge, and a computer.

I think it is impossible to make music without an instrument. even if this instrument is just your brain.

Yes, it helps, but not essential.

Isn't a computer an instrument?

Same thing that makes a Mozart melody better than a Dj Krust one
I've never heard Dj Krust (I avoid most things with 'DJ' in the name, usually), but I still don't see 'what' makes someone's melody (or beat) better than anothers. Saying 'same thing that makes blah-blah better than blarh-blarg' doesn't count and isn't very helpful, sorry. I'm sure you could find millions of people who prefer DJ X's melodies to Mozart's.

Is personal taste still allowed, or does the arbitrary concept of 'good' supercede that?

I dunno, but if he has that, I bet he is pretty good at playing 'whack-a-mole' too. Still doesn't make him a musician! ;) :lol:

Yeah, I think that's a good way of thinking of it :)
Music with dinner is an insult both to the cook and the violinist.

Wonder how much longer before the term 'elitist pigs' rears it's ugly head... ya just know it's coming.

I kinda agree too .. although there is a side of me that absolute worships a skilled instrumentalist in the traditional sense. Someone like a John McLaughlin or a John Coltrane.

Razor blade is a tool, splicing block is an instrument.

Do you have to play an instrument?

No, you don't.

But why then not just sit down and have a smoke listening to a fine groovy LP you just brought back from the store?

You can ask your mate to teach you the basis of guitar playing, or use a kazoo, or sing as well, explore the kitchen elements and recreate the battery (tip : forks and spoons in the bottom of a pan do the snare), oh and other tip, take a look at the multimedia dpt of a big store, where they sell EJay loop cds, etc, possibilities are infinite, life is great ain't it?

A famous writer said music was the only admirable art, that is the only in which one couldn't cheat, but well, must have been long ago, and indeed, it was last year...
...But Prince said today "Kids today, I mean, they're so talented and sophisticated," he said. "They can create their own albums on laptops. They can deliver it through the Internet. They can even be their own distribution service." So really, things go fast!

Besides, chances are those who do will swear their great gods YOU HAVE TO, whether those who don't will nervously shout NO YOU DON'T...

But if the question is can you make a worldwide hit without even entering a studio once in your life, clearly yes, but that's another buisness maybe, don't you think?

Also what about : <Do you like sugar?> for the next poll?...
...No! don't tell me that... it's done already?!!

i found this and it kind of sums up what i was getting at:

Tool applies broadly to a device that facilitates work.

Instrument refers especially to a relatively small precision tool (not literally a small precision tool) used by trained professionals.

in other words, i play my guitar (instrument) into my computer (tool) to make my music. the instrument makes the music, but the computer records it.

in all reality though, a computer is also an instrument, so i'm not sure what i'm getting at... :bang:

What's a splicing block? It's not in my dictionary (not the best one, admittedly) and Babelfish comes up with all kinds of sillyness.

//begin non-serious part

I wonder if a splicing block sounds as good as the razors used by Einstürzende Neubauten.

//end non-serious part

I really do wonder, though.
