Suspense-wise, I think Dog Soldiers is unbeatable, right up there tying with Aliens..

My favorites?
The first three Frankenstein films (Frankenstein, The Bride Of Frankenstein, Son Of Frankenstein). All three recently reissued on DVD in a box set.
Plan 9 From Outer Space
Psycho
The House On Haunted Hill (excellent William Castle cheesefest)
The Tingler
Night Of The Living Dead
Shallow Grave (particularly near the end where our three villians are out for each other's blood)
The Birds
Invasion Of The Body Snatchers (first version)
The Thing (both versions, though the John Carpenter version was especially scary)
Island Of Blood
Television? Boris Karloff's Thriller! was great, so was Night Gallery.
My old-time radio interest has me finding all sorts of nuggets for audio scares, one of the best was Nightfall, a CBC/NPR co-production that got yanked becuase listeners found it too scary! There's also Lights Out Everybody, Quiet Please, Murder At Midnight, The Price Of Fear. Escape did some incredible stuff like "Three Skeleton Key" (people trapped in a lighthouse swarming with carnivorous rats!), "Pollock And The Porroh Man", "Blood Bath", "Leinengen Vs. The Ants". Suspense also did some cool ones like "The House In Cypress Canyon" and an adaption of Lovecraft's "The Dunwhich Horror"

I guess it kinda straddles the line between SF and Horror, but you should see Shinya Tsukamoto's 'Tetsuo'.
Haven't seen too much like it before or since.
I'd also plug Takashi Miike's 'Audition'.
I like some of Argento's stuff but he always seems to resort to lame endings...

When Halloween was first released I took two band members to see it. I had already seen it and knew the best parts. Just at the moment the closet door opened and the body fell down I grabbed the bass player. He jumped out of his seat, popcorn flying, and shouted "Oh Shite. You scared the Hell out of me."
It was one of my better moments.

Jacob's Ladder
Susperia
Dracula (Tod Browning)

The first "Hellraiser" was a pretty scary flick. #2 and #3, well.. OK.. then they went totally bad.
The old Hammer Draculas were decent, not too scary but fun.

HellSeeker..that one kicked ass..I LOVED the way they show you the Sinobites for the first time all low-fi through the little Camcorder screen when they're torturing that chick in the guy's living room..PRIMO!
But I got bummed out when they resorted to the two headed detective part..that was kinda stupid.
Horror is my fav kinda movie if it isn't obvious all ready

Horror thread, y'say? I see several that could easily qualify.
Oh -- sorry, a horror movie thread. My bad.
This might not qualify anyhow, but: I like the psycho-horror atmosphere of the "Leaphorn and Chee" detective stories on TV's "Mystery!" Never read the books but I understand the adaptation from Tony Hillerman's novels was fairly skillful. Not perfect. But that's TV for you.

The Others scared the crap out of me - a proper scary ghost story.
Someone else mentioned Jacob's Ladder - that is one brilliant film.
