are you implying Im drunk or a pirate?

just jokin mate, the way i read your post to me it felt like the song  didnt mean to offend
and even if you are a drunken pirate,as long as you remember to feed the parrot it would be no ones business but your own :D
absolutely no offence taken!
just to confirm, the platverb test was a set of lso files and samples I downloaded from a site (which I cant remember) where they have a database of performance comparisons for different machines. I only did the test to compare my new laptop with my old desktop, desktop only managed 12 which made me and my parrot very happy.

For me I try to balance high CPU VSTi's which take almost no memory with low CPU ROMplers that take a lot of memory. I also try to use low CPU products like Pro53 over high CPU products like Z3ta+ when possible. Some VSTi's that suck too much CPU have been discarded if they do not earn their cycles with extrordinary sound. I'll put up with a higher CPU drain from z3ta+ and Rhino because they are worth it. Luckily it is easy to find good filler that does not take too much power.

P4 2.6 with 600 meg on main DAW.

This varies wildly for me. Sometimes one patch from Reaktor or CronoX 2 playing a 4 note pad can use over 40% of my CPU alone. On the same system I can run Battery, Trilogy, Atmosphere, Vapor, Morphology, Tera 2 and three instances of Pro53 and stay under 50%. These are some of the best for low CPU usage, but those ROMplers take some memory if you do not use streaming.

P4 2.8 with 1 Gig secondary computer.

I can get 8 - 16 parts in EmulatorX with some effects on this system. I have also run 8 parts in Tera 2 along with a collection of ROMpler sounds from Trilogy, Atmosphere and the NI ROMplers.

All I need to be happy is one more VSTi.

Trojan Badger wrote:My typical layout is:

Battery with a 70mb drum set
Sampletank with the Squids C70 yamaha piano and patches for tambourine, bongos and congas
A couple of Styluses
2-3 Atmospheres
1 or 2 Trilogies (depending on the movement of the piece)
B4 playing on 2 midi channels (1 chords, one solo stuff)
2 or 3 Amplitubes
and then SX's build-in compressors on up to 10 audio channels, EQ on all channels, one or 2 reverbs as master sends, a delay as a master send, and about 20-30% headroom.

Once I did all the above + a Reaktor with Virux Dreams and an Absynth and that was pretty much it for the processor. P4 2.53 GHz, 1MB ram.

It's loads of performance, I reckon as much as I need right now. But then, I'm mostly a sampler/rompler man. Synth-based people may need lots more.

Thank you all for the responses. This one caught my attention because it is the amount I try to run. It is not going smoothly.

Trojan Badger,

Can you run this kind of set up with out and locking up or anything?

hum... well Ive had 36 comps and eq's all going at once with elephant, a few anwida reverbs, a couple free synths etc... id have to open the project for the exact names of everything. plenty of room for more...

i work at 128 samples of latency normally. works on my 2.8 or my 3.6 (p4).

I'm running a bit over 70 synths, effects, and sampler instances (I believe its on 24 channels) in orion plat so far (the goa/psy trance part of my sectionz trance-cathelon entry) on my old, creaky athlon 2000+. The cpu meter is bouncing quickly between 80 and 90%.. I have to use 2048 samples latency to get it not to crackle :hihi:

its a combination of short leads and long atmospheric warbles and pads coupled with a lot of compressors and nyquist eq plugins.. I think its the most I'm going to be able to squeeze out of the box before a mixdown..

note this is at 44.1khz.. I accidentally tried 96khz once with this song.. and the cpu meter was at ~150% cpu usage.. although the meter can go up to 900% at least (found that out with another mistake :o)

actually orion ate this song.. choked on a plugin.. sent it to rich and he said basically the file is broke beyond repair.. oh well I got the song to reload though long enough to do a mixdown whew..

Hmmm... interesting. :|

I can run one Vurtbox. With crackles.
