Yup, nice combo. Geist plus samples is an excellent choice
Yeah you can't go wrong with Geist! And Goldbaby does some excellent stuff too. I use it for just about everything these days.

Some good recommendations so far. I'll add Arturia Spark 2 / SparkLE. It's very comprehensive: does samples, synthesis, sequencing, fx, etc. And, for about the same price (or less) of most of the software-only products, you get a really nice hardware controller included. Got mine online for $149 a while back. Keep an eye out. https://www.arturia.com/products/drums/spark2/overview

Also, they have an iOS version of the software called iSpark if you have an iPad. :tu:

Looked at Stix. Quite nice, but the copy protection put me off.

I had a look at Sequence (BigFish), and at MOTO BPM.

Also checked out Geist 2. Not bad, but from reviews it seems to be a step down from the original Geist.

Truthfully, a simple sampler will work the best to sequence in your DAW, like Eclectus said.

However, if you want a all in one solution, Geist, Battery or Spark or the best bets. I have Geist, and though its super complex, its very intuitive if you want specific things like a seperate sequencer, slicing, loads of fx & control. Battery if you just want to sequence in your DAW and need just a sample player. Spark if you want great kits already with a basic sequencer.

Your daw and Battery 4 will take you far. It comes with a nice pallet of drum samples.

Dopesonix Beatmachines I have seen mentioned a bit too. Basically samples in a nice GUI with a few parameters to change? Maybe?

Checked out Spark 2...yep, looks like the one for me plus it has a nice selection of acoustic kits and drum machines.

I'd love to hear a demo of just the claps in Spark 2. Can anyone chime in and provide an mp3?(obviously it would have to have some chords and rhythm behind it for legal reasons?).

The best way would be to download the Spark demo and check it out for yourself. It times out after 20 mins and save/import/export is disabled, but you should be able to get a good idea of it's capabilities. Also, since it loads samples, you could add whatever claps (etc) you prefer and save it as a preset. Goldbaby or SamplesFromMars would be your friend. :)

When you purchase it, you also get access to a few of their expansion libraries which are pretty cool. If you dig around on their website you'll find them.

IMO, the best value is to buy the SparkLE controller because it comes with a full version of Spark 2. It's $199 on Amazon right now but it frequently drops to $149 which is the same price as the software alone. Even at $199 its a bargain, IMO. Good luck!

I'm bass music guy.I have some Drum VSTs.
I have Maschine Studio, Spark LE, Geist2, MPC Software, UVI Drum Designer, Battery 4 etc....

I think Maschine MK3 is best drum VST for Hiphop, because Maschine has awesome expansions for Hiphop.
and Maschine Software has a lot of awesome features than other drum plugins.
If you don't need Maschine Hardware, in that case, I recommend Komplete Kontrol M32($129) including Maschine software.
But Maschine software CPU usage is little bit high for my Core i5 Quad.

Spark LE has good sounds and low CPU usage. Arturia released some expansions and free expansions.
But Hiphop expansion for Spark is "Hiphop Essential" only...
I think Spark has effects are not bad, but not good enough for me.

MPC Software has many Expansions for Hiphop, and low CPU usage.
Expansions prices are very cheap.
But MPC software using as Plugin mode in DAW is nightmare...
