Can "Decent Sampler" read SFZ-files?ARPQuadra wrote: Thu Apr 01, 2021 6:05 pm And many of the instruments are now available in Decent Sampler format: Decent Sampler is free, just like Plogue's sforzando, so you don't necessarily need the full version of Kontakt to benefit from Pianobook...)

The answer is: NO!
I just visited their site and realized, that Decent Sampler uses
its own format, the decent-xml-format.
The SFZ format has meanwhile developed into a quasi-standard. That's
because it can be edited openly with any text editor and is easy to read.
And because it is not assigned to a single sampler, instead there are a
handful of samplers that work with this format. So why didn't Decent
Sampler use the SFZ format? Or the "new extended SFZ format" of the
sfizz player?
I think it's great that there is a new, additional free sampler. But it's a
bit of a shame that the sampler is based on a new format of its own.
A new format of its own helps to shred and diffuse the sample landscape
a little further. That is not necessarily beneficial!
Mmmh ... anyway I wish the Decent crew good luck and success for
their new sampler.

I'm a bit puzzled and frustrated about the while Decent Sampler thing.
It feels like an awful lot of effort spent in the wrong direction. I'm unclear what it offers that we don't get with SFZ? The feature set is terribly limited - unless I'm wrong, there are no LFOs or filter envelope, for example.
Is it because it is almost entirely focused on basic playback of small libraries like pianos and strings, perhaps?
I'm a recent SFZ convert, and would rather see more efforts towards furthering the world of SFZ. I'd love to see a move towards a unified SFZ 3 that consolidates all the varied compatibility issues, and adds a few features to increase the appeal of the format past the techy programmer crowd. A few "sexy" custom GUI options wouldn't hurt - just a background image, and some knobs, buttons, and maybe pull-down menus.
A more approachable and modern plugin than Plogue wouldn't hurt either.
That said, SFZ is great. It's lovely to have a "serious" instrument sample playback option that's not one of the three monsters (Kontakt, Halion, Falcon). Coding in text is not a big problem for me, but I don't see why there couldn't be a fully GUI-programmable VST instrument. Or at least a plugin with a good dedicated coding screen.
Anyway, this thread wasn't supposed to be about SFZ, apologies for ranting off-topic.
