I'm new and already looking forward to next month's comp. Unless there is a real need to cut them back for server space (can't see that being the case), I don't see why anyone would even think about stopping it. It's not like there's a shortage of entries, even if in your opinion, some aren't up to snuff. Let's face it, everyone excels in different areas and no one will produce their best material month after month (though clearly some people here are incredibly talented). It gives everyone a higher odds of winning in a category that best suits them.
Even though I know damn well I'm not going to enter the comp every month, I'd be sad to see it become less frequent.
Music has a lot to do with interpretation - what some people think is great, I think is garbage, and I'm 100% sure it goes the other way round too.
I'm in favour of keeping it monthly. It's not doing any harm.

the competition shouldn't be rested. but.
why the ten votes? cut it back to five again, ten is madness. especially with the large number of entries. also, cut back to 1:30 or something. especially with the large number of entries.
so, in summary -
five votes!
1:30!
sisters, brothers, who's with me?

Thanks god I haven't entered my submission yet... if I will.
The thing is, it must be up to each other to enter or not. Too many tracks a year for some? OK, keep low profile and don't show up. I don't think that to "control" submissions' quality this way is a good idea and the right way to go.
I vote for NO!
Ooops, i's not a votation!

IMO ten is hardly enough.
especially with the large number of entries.

Agreed-- the more entries, the MORE votes there should be, though I think 10 is ideal and wouldn't necessarily want to see more.
Shorter songs... that's something I could buy into a little more, but 2:00 is still pretty short. At 1:30, most ideas are just getting STARTED, so it might be too short.
In summary:
10 votes
2:00 length

Maybe this month I'll even participate so that my opinion is worth something.

Five is much more manageable, I think. Picking 10 may be easier than picking 5, but ranking 10 songs took a lot of time when I participated last time.Wopelka wrote:i don't get it...seldom wrote:ten is madness. especially with the large number of entries

Doing the competitions is what actually got me started making stuff for people to hear. And it was a bloody struggle getting 45 seconds worth done.
I have sort of dropped out of doing them, because Ive now got that impetus goin, but it was effectively my starting point, and I dont think it would be right to deny folk the same chance to put their toes in the water just because they've not been here as long.
As for the prize thing, just getting some feedback was enough for me.

An idiot on Set Theory:
"In some cases there is an object called red that contains everything that is red. In much the same way a pot is a plate."

I thinks this month already has some high quality entries. Well, compared to mine at least.
I like the monthly contests. It's the only way I can force myself to finish something.

Has anyone mentioned possibly the greatest part of entering the contest?--The fun of being a part of a pretty great gang of clods making music (from impressive to inane, it doesn't matter) and being thus able to join in on the gossip threads. The gossip threads are the best on KvR usually.
I've only entered twice and can't for the forseeable future, but it was a good experience. I'd encourage everyone to try at least once--you'll love it.
10/2 works.
And like what whyterabbyt just said: I forced myself to join the first time because the theme was "island music" and I knew I'm one of the few who actually live on an island with a recognizable music style. I was no way ready to post a song publically but did anyway. Like I said: Try it!

you're all nutters. i can't see how it's easier to sort out ten votes in order of preference than five. it just means more people will end up getting a vote of some sort i guess which is fine... i suppose.
