Windows XP and local networking

Techincally, I believe that it is impossible to network firewalled PCs in an XP network. Make sure that your Windows XP Firewall are disabled, no third-party software Firewalls are running, and there are no hardware Firewalls in between the two computers.

if you havent tried this yet.. set one specifically as the host and the other the client

that is, the host ip should be (and only be) 192.168.0.1

the other computer should be 192.168.0.x (anthing but 1 or 0) manually set this up in the tcp/ip settings..

you'll have to have the proper gateway and blagetyblahs setup additionally (as listed on the tcp/ip settings window) consult your linksys quickstartup guide.. I remember seeing it all in there before in a lot better detail than I can give at nearly 3am

basically .. the easiest way (imo) is to use ICS (part of win98SE and up) and have the client use the DHCP server (host) to address itself..

True. That's why XPs firewalls suck and why you should just disable them. They're not configurable and simply f**k up your local network.
In case you need a software firewall, use some third party stuff that you can en/disable temporarily.
Personally, I'm using the firewall of my router, allowing me to have my local network running without switching things on/off all the time (it just doesn't sit between my computers).

I also have laptop and desktop using wireless linksys (W54G). The workgoup worked only when the XP firewall was disabled and this is not a problem since the linksys is also a firewall
