I don't personally have one...YET...but I've heard nothing but good things about www.dawbox.com. Excellent prices, service (from what I hear), and specs. You can actually send him your hardware (if you want) and he will integrate it for you.

But congrats on your Carillon, I hear good things about them too!

out of curiosity, what is your home built system? might be helpful to me as i'm in the process of buying parts for a DAW as we speak. best of luck with your Carillon system.

it contains:

an Abit NF7-S v2 with SATA
AMD XP3200+ Barton (the fast one)
1 GIG Kingston PC3200 DDR
2 x IBM Deskstar 7200RPM
XFX GeForce FX5600 256Mb
Zalman Ultra Quiet CPU fan
300W Ultra Quiet PSU (have a 550W Antec as well, but am keepoing that one

)

Yesterday I've discovered most of my problems are pagefault related, but since I've done almost every diagnosis available (from memtest to open heart surgery) I now realise my machine needed a decent registry hack. But anyway, I'm glad to have upgraded to a kick arse P4 that's guaranteed to run smooth and reliable

looks decent but the fact that the description says..

"high quality stainless power button"

..makes we a bit wary

and I don't think they are as quiet or strongly build as the Carillon. The Carillon's also come with remote technical support and their service and support is told to be excellent

"spaceman" what are your thoughts on going from the AMD to a (I assume) Pentium4 - as I have already said I have a 2 year old Carilon system that needs upgrading, I have seriously pondered the AMD route due to the discussions I have read here about its raw power for Plug-ins and no De-normal problems.

I can't really compare it to the fast P4s since I never owned one. The P4s with their fast frontbus have always been faster than the AMDs but having said that, I've never managed to get my XP3200 on it's knees (especially with the 400Mhz frontbus and fast dual channel RAM) and it's a serious amount less expensive that the Intel. I think it's still too early to spend your money on the new 64bit CPUs..

so if you want the fastest, get an Intel.. if you want very good value for money, go AMD

I don't know how far spread the de-normal problem is, have never seen it 'in action'

It is a very rare event. I have only experienced it once with a dodgy plugin. So, don't fret about it.

that's good to hear, anyway.. it sounded like someone that can be fixed by the developer anyway

I've found tons of denormals, almost every one of them has been fixed by the developer. Mostly found during beta testing.

my doctor told me the same thing.. he gave me some pills for it and I think it worked

I have had few instances of denormalization with some of the iZotope plugins but they quickly remedied it. Still in terms of percentage of plugs it is still a very rare phenomenon.

OH yes what does a faster 'frontbus' do - silly question maybe but what aspect of a DAW will/should be improved?
