I get that you don't want to do online banking. But if you had a separate, completely unlinked account, that only held a small amount of funds (e.g 100E) what would be the issue? Genuinely curious.

I can't really couch for him, other than that he seems on the level from the contact I've had with him. Not sure where abouts he is in the world, but hopefully he'll have it sorted soon.

Not to stereotype, but if my wife could provide a justifiable use scenario for every pair in a cupboard full of shoes, I'd have no argument. So perhaps you just need to stop wasting your money, or start using what you buy
