It's more complex than that. In the next 6 months, I want my son to have his own computer. He will get my wife's machine, which is a 600mhz. That'll do him fine. This means I need to do the "PC Shuffle" and insert in a more powerful machine at the top, and move all the parts and pieces around between all the other machines. Looking for best bang for the buck right now for the 'new' machine at the top of the foodchain, and the rest will trickle down.

Ah, I see. That makes more sense. I would suggest the same setup I have, by the way, though the amount of RAM would depend on how much sampling you do. The 3.0ghz P4 I have runs $220, while a 3.2ghz P4 is $280 with no significant boost in performance. A 3.4ghz P4 is something like $400 and again, no huge boost. You could go AMD, in theory, if you really want to save money, but Intel is generally more powerful (and better at overclocking, I believe; I've seen a 3.0ghz processor go to 3.8ghz).

There is a big buzz around the athlon xp2500 mobile processor. The chip is hand picked to run at low voltage, is guaranteed unlocked and most are getting a 600 mhz overclock with simple multiplier settings with nothing more than a stock heatsink) (stock is 1800 mhz +600mhz. It installs in desktop pcs. Its in short supply now. I am going to install one into my main box as soon as i can source it in Canada. I have a supplier bookmarked but they are out of stock. The chip is barton core with 512 cache. IT is only a few bucks more that the athlon xp2500 with more room for overclocking. (Around 120 Canadian) - Scott Harris

Athlon 3000+ 2000 MHz @ 2450 MHz (128 KiB L1 cache, 512 KiB L2 cache)
MSI K8N Neo FSR
2 sticks of 512 MiB TwinMOS PC3200 memory
E-MU 1212M

Running:

Windows 2000 Professional (without swap)
Cubase SX 2

Maybe you can create a test with demo VSTis of your favourite synths. They're testable by all people. I've got sfz+ giga, so we might be able to test some libraries as well.

Yes, this is why I started the 'most brutal VSTi thread'. LEt me sift through a few this weekend, and get some projects saved out. I should have some time to do this.
