Have you tried Reaper?

Post

antic604 wrote: Fri Apr 24, 2020 5:18 pm ... I once made a short 'songs' using exactly the same patterns, VSTs and presets in Bitwig, Reason and S1 and posted them in few places polling people which one sounds better (or which one is Reason, because there's this myth about 'Reason sound') and I'd say all 3 got in general the same number of votes, i.e. for all intents and purposes they're indistinguishable.
Is that link still up? I would love to give a listen and see what I hear. If it is still alive, could you post it here?

Thanks, antic604

Yes, it's an excellent DAW for the price... and people should support it and not keep using the trial version. I see why it's so popular... and Bingo... :D

It's still here, but all the files were deleted since and I don't think I even have the song files anymore:

Also, this one was interesting ;)

What's the current share price of Reaper?
Perhaps a good old neo liberal capitalist investment opportunity...

It's cheap as chips.
Also, the trial version is fully functional, you just have a window popping up at startup to remind you of purchasing it... It isn't my main daw but I think the developers deserve kudos. It's like 60 bucks which is crazy for what it can do.
It just doesn't suit my particular needs.
My favourite 'midi' editing is the FL Studio piano roll. As you can run FL as rewire or just as a vst plugin that's a bonus/no-brainer. I use Studio One these days, it's fine for midi esp. as there were a lot of improvements in the last version. It still lacks the sophistication of Cubase which I would say is the heavyweight...

Just a FWIW, but I had tried Cubase years ago and hated it. Last year when they had the cross grade sale, I tried it again and bought it (I had been using Studio One). Getting around in there felt familiar and comfortable like Studio One. I felt like I was working in S1, barely a transition. There are different features of course, but I thought I’d mention this since you might feel totally different about it now rather than basing it on how you disliked it before. I hated it before. Now it is my main DAW and I never thought I would say that. I love it, and it does so much more.

It's not a myth. It's from an era when Reason didn't support REs or vsts. So the tracks done in Reason, using Reason synths and effects, were recognizable.
That's what I'm addressing in 1st paragraph of that post. But the myth persist, even when we have dozens of awesome REs not to mention VSTs.
It's because people are probably still judging Reason from Reason 6 or earlier and haven't tried it since.

Was it 5 or 6 that was the last one that people could find from "unofficial" sites? :hihi:

Thanks for this info... When I tried Cubase, it crashed all the time and I couldn't get anything done. I hated it and haven't used it since.

I do hear many like Cubase and might take your advise and give it another try... Although, I hate having a dongle. They should at least go to iLok.
