Would a firewall or something like Zone Alarm protect me against things like this?
Nope.

But if you install spybot it can "immunise" your browser against unauthorised changes and extensions.

Just as an update;

Highjack this found the problem and using the analysis page that was posted by blixa the problem is fixed. :D

Thanks for the help!

Y'know, if you people didn't use Internet Explorer, a lot of that stuff wouldn't happen.

I usually use Mozilla.

When I got this problem I was using Netscape. Even though I was using Netscape it was IE and windows explorer that became affected.

The spyware/highjacker wrote to the system folder inside of the windows folder and created code in the user.dat and system.dat files.

I had this hijack tool take over IE and force my homepage to be makemesearch.com. To get rid of this, go into the Control Panel and choose add/remove programs. Look for a program called "Search Toolbar" and uninstall (remove) it.

Then go into Control Panel / Internet Options and reset your home page back to whatever you want.

I also ran regedit and did a search for "makemesearch.com" and deleted those registry entries (don't worry, IE will recreate those values properly when they don't exist).

This fixed the problem completely.
