I dunno, I kind of find that it can do the opposite, at least something with variably-controlled random like Riffer. If I just sit down at a keyboard, I'm naturally going to drift towards the sorts of styles and progressions I'm familiar with. When I'm looking for something different, though, it's great to have something where you can just surf through some random sequences until you get something that you haven't heard before, and can then work on it and embellish it from there. If used for that, they can lead you down interesting sonic roads you might never have traveled otherwise.
