Because David Gruel was already held in a certain reverence by the time foo fighters were made, and he already had most great musicians of the time on board (even nine inch nails etc). And no, most didn’t, and don’t know how to sound like that because there is an element of pop to their rock. That’s what makes it successful.

At this point, I'm pretty sure you're MSU.

Why no FF imitators? It's a good question I certainly can't answer.
I suspect they were an "end of era" band, in this case Grunge.
Their first three albums were pretty damned good. After that, it all became arena rock.

Because their albums get progressively worse and tiresome?

Story goes there was an electrical engineer (probably with west side connections) from wright patt who built his own drum machine. It was a huge, honking, nonportable contraption. Gigantic. Roland approached him and asked if they could use his hi hats, he agreed. There’s your 808 hats. Somewhere in a west side garage, or basement, probably still sits the original 808. I saw a documentary about it that was buried by google long ago. Also, zapp, Bootsy Collins, and shit ton of famous rock came out of that area.

Maybe the formula got a little too formula while times they were a' changing. I honestly draw a blank trying to think of one of their songs because other bands were more interesting.mumpcake wrote: Sat Feb 27, 2021 4:57 pm When the Beatles came out, there were tons of bands who tried to sound like them. In the 70s, you had plenty of Led Zeppelin wannabees. Rock radio in the 80s was ruled by Van Halen wannabees. The 90s had its fair share of bands that thought they were Nirvana. Even Garbage's first album spawned a few soundalikes.
So why is it that a band that has had every album get serious airplay over the last 25 years seems to have nobody trying to copy them? It's not like their formula is so damn hard to replicate. It's not like they have a once in a generation vocalist or the most technical musicians ever. They are a garage rock band that puts out a couple of good songs every once in a while. How is it the music industry has not flooded the airwaves with similar stuff?
