What always puzzles me is, whenever I see someone presenting or using Studio One in a video, they are on a Mac...

Because macOS is better for audio work (and has been for many years now - less hassle with drivers, less issues with low latency etc). I wouldn't want to get back to Windows with audio production (and funnily enough I have MBP M1 and Ryzen 5 3600 windows desktop for gaming, so I could).
Small performance advantages of desktop CPUs would get eaten by Windows' mediocre audio subsystem.

Uh... no? The only way its mediocre compared to Mac is the fact that it hates multiple drivers - so in some niche cases, you're better off going mac. And especially if you are a streamer - have fun streaming DAWs with Windows. That is gonna be a sad experience.

Besides that, Windows is just as suitable. I've used Windows 10 for years now and I'm very, very happy with the performance. The only thing I would say is that you want to have a separate installation for audio work specifically. Do not mix games with that os. Before I would do it, and that's how I got not only driver issues but stability issues too. Now there's no issues - no bsods, no driver issues, no latency issues. And my 4790k does just as well as one could hope from a processor this old.

Best of all, you don't have to deal with Apple. Though you do have to deal with MS, but I'll take that any time over Apple products. Any goddamn time.

Nonsense.

It's probably because the MacOS UI looks cooler. There is also a good chance that the developers are all using Macs. I don't know many software engineers that use Windows. It's pretty much only people who develop apps for Windows. Most use Macs, some use Linux, very few use Windows.

It’s easier to make videos of that kind on macOS and most do it on their laptops.

Shame so many years later we still discuss how some things are 'better' on OSX vs. W10 ? I tried to get DAW output to get to Zoom for a client some time back on my w10. It was interesting.
In which ways would OSX make this easier ? Or, how is OSX more apt for streaming vs. W10 ? Just curious ? Its not a use case senario for me.

So looking at the used market, and the Dell Optilex 3060 full size intel i7 8700 8th gen, 16gig machine, Dell warranty till December 23, seller says as good as new. For bout exactly half the price of a new m1 mini (8/512). Think this is a good deal ? I will upgrade with an m.2, rest i think is good to go. In budget.

I like the case, and I think 8th gen i7 are fairly upto speed ?

Thank you all for the advice.

My assumption is that it's better for presentation. Like echosystm wrote: It looks cooler. ;)

@sidhu

I think that's about right. I'm using a travel machine with a 7th gen i7 and it handles 4 times over sampling fine. Not sure how many tracks i could get at 4* (I usually play one track at a time and freeze it or bounce it) but honestly, I don't think anyone gets more then a few tracks of live audio at 4* no matter what you use rn without bouncing.

I have absolutely zero issues to work with audio on Windows 10. I'm sure it's the usual: Mac people who are still used to Windows Me judging about things they haven't used in 20 years.

...And as far as the tired mac vs 10 argument. I use both, and have since the 90's. MAC is better at some things, windows is better at others.... so pick your poison. I can say some of the old "mac is better" arguments are tired, and no longer valid (they used to be).

for me I got pissed off at mac for the way they have treated me, and I just haven't felt like picking it back up. I'm not buying a new computer and iPhone every 2.5 years, and they have stolen far more from me than windows at this point. windows just steals your patience, peace of mind, and your time. MAC steals your money and data.

This. Windows handles poorly internal audio routing - anything that involves DAW audio & mics simultaneously (without recording the mic input inside a DAW and aligning it), you're basically screwed in Windows. This is the biggest weakness of Windows as far as it goes to people who actually make YouTube content or stream.

There are probably ways to make it work, use third party apps, but I imagine at large it's still going to be very messy and bad.

So this is why you should be surprised whenever anyone at all uses Windows on DAW streaming etc. I think you can do it with some hardware possibly, but not sure. Or alternatively you can hire an editor who does that stuff for you so you record it separately and let the editor worry about it.

And for such reasons, this particular metric ("how many X users are on Windows in YouTube") is not a good metric to generally scoop it. They will be mostly Mac users for this reason.

OSX handles internal routing, so it should be 100% possible to do there. I recommend getting it if you need for work or anything important.
