14 years ago, yesterday, there was No iPhone!

Yeah.

And Microsoft blew the early opportunity it had because of internal politics. Well, hell. So did Nokia and even AOL. And, yes, I speak from experience. They lacked leadership with vision, willing to do what it took. I don’t particularly like Jobs, but he did what it took.

I think we take for granted how much that device changed the world. We think of the internet as this thing that’s been pervasive for a long time (since at least the 90s) but the vast majority of people did not extensively use the internet until it was in everyone’s pockets. That moment accelerated us to the place we are today. Though it would’ve happened eventually otherwise, there is no doubt that it hastened is on our path to mistrusting one another and ripping each other off wherever and whenever possible.
