It's definitely possible in VCV Rack (and other modulars too, I'd assume) using a delay. Regular synths don't seem to be built for that kind of operation. Even if they say you can modulate anything with anything, they're usually taking about internally generated signals, not live inputs.
Correct, none of them can. They can take an input signal and modulate a wave with that, and that isn't what focus of this thread is. Same with FM8 FX. You need a delay line and some multipliers to do it, so an effect with two pairs of inputs (for a stereo effect).

yeah some of them can

bitwigs grid, voltage modular, reaktor and vcv rack could all do it with the delay method
also softube modular. any proper modular with audio in, audio rate modulation and delay

consider using stuff like filter fm, ring mod instead as the delay method doesnt always work that well. in grid it sounded harsh, it was good in softube though

maybe try it with frequency shifters too

you can use the left and right channels to get 2 sounds in, or some have sidechain input

zebrify can use an input as a modulator

it works much better when you sample the sounds rather than live input so you can properly control the pitch/phase though

either method works better with samples of synths like analog sines or saws etc (try the free syntronik), or instruments with not many harmonics like a flute, than with stuff like guitar and vocals, obvs experiment but it tends to be a mess doing fm with complex sounds. to not just get noise, at least 1 of the sounds usually has to be fairly simple and/or use low modulation amounts

to be honest, i only scanned the top of the list he was referencing "phase plant, avenger, i think rapid .." so that's my bad

i've built my own FManything patches in regular reaktor, the toybox blocks and my regular protying environment plogue bidule so i understand the circuitry :)
this thread creates PMs for me every couple of years
filtering a complex the signal before modulation can create really interesting results as well.
oversampling can work wonders in the delay line too, as well as trying different interpolation methods

i've never used bitwig or voltage modular so i've no idea what's they're capable of but it's cool if you can do audio rate modulation! vcv rack always slips off my internal radar; can't remember why. the grid and the audio rate modulation piqued my interest in bitwig again a few years ago, but logic's far to entrenched in my process at the moment.

this
fair enough i skimmed the thread too

is your reaktor one on the user library? I'd love to try it
I didnt use any multipliers when i did it, just modulating delay time at audio rate

you could prob do it in the free versions if voltage modular and vcv (bridge)

i also thought that it could be possible with modulating a granular synth or grain delay at audio rate

just tried it with modulating a pitch shifter at audio rate in bitwig and it worked
it didnt work with frequency shifter though
