I used the command line to create a bootable Big Sur install disk on a spare flash drive but for some reason it isn’t showing when I boot with the option pressed. I had already enabled boot from external drive so I could boot from my cloned drive so maybe I did something wrong creating the bootable disk? Trying MDS now instead.
It’s an old usb2 drive - would that be enough or should I use a more modern usb3 or usbA drive?

Managed to make a bootable install disk using MDS but now I need to format the main hard drive but the broken install left behind a volume named 'update' which seems coterminous with the Mackintosh HD data drive so I'm not sure what to do with it - how can I merge them back into one drive?

Is there a way to turn off all the silly hand holding in Big Sur? I am finding on the whole my system is faster but now I can't leave any installs or plugin scans unattended because of the constant stream of 'Do you want to grant the installer access to....' type of messages

Those are related to Full Disk Access in the Security section. You could try and grant Installer full access and see if that works. I haven't tried that here as I'm ok with keeping things locked-down until they become annoying. I guess I have a pretty high threshold these days

That's an idea - maybe if I do that for my DAWS at least?
