That's a tough one. Audio is subjective and you might not want to trust corrections from teachers who are not or have never been professionals. I was fortunate enough to have had two teachers who had numerous platinums/Grammys and even they rarely gave me corrections.

Schooling definitely, get a taste of things that self teaching can't provide.

I took guitar and drums lessons for years, and various school classes in theory.

You don't want to end up slinging catchphrases like beatz and chill out dude!

She went for a victory lap at the end. Can we agree that John Lennon ultimately committed more harm than good?

Truthfully for audio engineering specifically, the answer in the best of all worlds would be neither. You should have a famous audio engineer be your mentor, and work in the studio, learning from the greats, and moving up. Given that is unlikely to ever happen, both formal schooling and the self taught route have problems. Education is generally superior to just screwing up until you figure it out, but not at all costs. going into severe debt in the hopes of snagging one of very few jobs in a dwindling industry isn't really adviseable, but dreams are dreams, I am not going to tell you not to pursue them, just be clear headed about it, and have a backup plan?

As for music Theory: I tried the self-taught route, and yeah, don't do that. I wish I had taken the opportunity to actually learn that stuff from actual teachers when I was young.
