Cubase's sampler track - what's the advantage over typical sampler, if any?

Never used it a lot, but those times I did i found it rather quick and easy to use, as opposed to Halion or other big samplers. It’s just an option.
And if you want more features and complexity, isn’t it somehow possible to transfer the sampler track to Halion or the grooveagent?

btw. just played a bit with it and found supports rex(.rx2) format so I've officially found it useful

It's just quick and simple to use sampler. That's all there is to it, no tricks or cons. I like the vintage sampler emulation it sounds quite authentic.

There are ways around this. You can for example drag a drum loop, chop it up and spread out all the individual hits across the range of the keyboard. Any layering must be done manually but you should probably be using Groove Agent SE for that sort of task. It's an old fashioned way of working but it works.

it's pretty obviously a time-saver, to make an instrument directly out of anything in the project

My tracks are rarely just an instrument, though. Usually it's followed by FX chain, perhaps sends the singal to FX track, is grouped in some bus. That makes it a bit - needlessly, IMO - more complex already.
Think of the sampler track as an instrument track that is a sampler. Everything that applies for instrument tracks applies to the sampler track (insert fx, sends etc etc etc). You just have better integration with the daw, more benefits workflow wise. It is a really great tool.

That's one of the best features.
Once you've got the sample inside sample track, there's a menu option to then move the sample into either Halion, Padshop, Groove Agent.

The other workflow thing I really like is being able to drag a midi clip straight intro sample track, and it renders it right there for you.

+1 This is really bad. On top of what you said, if you create a sampler track from the material of your song you have to keep that song available at its location on your drive forever if you want to use that sample on another song. Because Sampler Track does not have locate option other than the current songs Pool.

Yep exactly. I tried to make a work around by storing my sampler track in a "container project" that would carry all the sample ....but if you move that project, you break your presets...

^^^ not tried but it's an .xml file with
<string name="SamplePath" value="C:\Users\csaba\Desktop\a\Audio\wav\2\Loop #1 (128bpm).wav" wide="true"/>
in it so I think it can be edited by hand, paths are here https://helpcenter.steinberg.de/hc/en-u ... nd-Nuendo-

good to know anyway

Clever... but a bit laborious if you have a lot of tracks !

I think they might have wanted to mimic some of the Ableton aesthetic while ignoring the rest of their floaty window paradigm that they have been known for.
For me this is the biggest disadvantage :) It's taking a lot of screen space while it could be waaay smaller.
But I don't like this entire "dock windows aesthetic".

I thought it was introduced as a direct copy of Abletons version.

I still use Kontakt anyway, creature of habit.

even the browser-based vsc editor https://vscode.dev/ has folder/files search-replace so I think it can be solved
