eassae wrote: Wed Dec 22, 2021 9:00 pm that's exactly what I would do with a mono synth
Did it myself on that Snow Maiden piece I just posted! :ud:

Most of the orchestral instruments were changed to mono quite early on (or mid-side processed to be much narrower) and then it took me bloody ages to work out why they still didn't have enough space in the mix...reverb was still set to stereo! :ud: :) :dog: :help:
Ha!

In the past I've used mid-side quite a bit. I like Waves Center for this. That said I almost always had everything in stereo(I would just say two is better than one right?) so I think it will take me a bit to learn when and when not to use mono.
Yep - 2 is def better than 1! :)

Mono instruments in a stereo mix can actually make it all a lot easier at times...easier to place them in the soundstage - in terms of width, depth and height!

MID / SIDE processing always needs to be approached with great care as it can cause huge problems sometimes for various reasons. Nowadays, I will only use it if there's a clear reason for it...same for the nightmare known as 'multiband compression'...boy, have I screwed up some mixes with that! :)
The pan knob upgrade that happened in Logic a few years ago is very nice as well as you can pan and set the width. Not sure if it's the same in other daws.
Most will have something similar I would imagine, but probably not as well implemented as that...very useful!

I can do it in Sonar, but have to delve into the 'channel strip' function first.

hi essae,
nice to hear something new made by you. the kick is a "star". probably selfmade?

Also i can hardly follow the technical details you discussed with Mark - mono reverb... Reason has the mentioned knobs too. The mixer is modeled after a real console. I was wondering what to do with :D - now i know :)
Track is a bit short - but short is the new thing i guess, everything is accelerated nowadays.
it is better to have a track with some mistakes than a track without any soul
myself in 2022

Basically the mono reverb seems to really help give instruments their own space while not filling up all the space that is needed for other instruments. There are still a few stereo reverbs in this track, but there are elements that I think I've been able to make more distinctly right or left or center using the mono verbs.

For the kick I used two instances of PunchBox. The first instance has a very short 808 synth with a few transient samples for the high end—everything is rolled off around 25 cycle. The second is a longer 808 with all the high frequencies rolled off. Both instances have various processing, transient designers, etc… The second instance has a little bit of signal sent to the center mono reverb. I also created an aux with an instance of Waves Vinyl, that just has the crackle turned up, then I gated it, the gate opens from a sidechain signal from the first kick, so every time it hits theres a little sparkle.

I think I'll turn this into a full 3 or so minute track. I just wanted to get something out yesterday because it had been a few months since I'd really done anything with music. As Chameleon pointed out many of the short little lines could be developed further.

I'll post the final when I'm done.

This track may be seen as a follow up to your latest album, which still rotates in my player.. nice, indeed.

It wasn't me! (well, actually, it probably was) - apparently no longer an 'elderly', now a 'senior'! Is that promotion?

eassae,
Thank you for the review! Now your song: Nice audio quality. Can't say it's loaded with lots of catchy melodies, though I think this would work well for background music on a TV show or a movie. What state or country are you from?

I'm a Brooklyn boy. Thank you for checking out the track.

Updated: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

So I extended the track a minute and tried to flush out some of the themes in the beginning of the track…which I don't think really happened but I still kind of like how it's going. I've never been a big fan of repetition, but maybe this is a little too fractured? I like the idea of moments you get attached to instantly but never come back. Anyway still a work in progress. Not much different in the first two minutes except for some mix adjustments.

I think the main theme could be expanded into something soaring, but...
I don't think it's "too fractured" or particularly fractured. If you think that one, it comes back in the end, is incomplete, extend it, take the germ and make sequences arise from it orby some other obvious technique. You don't have to satisfy anyone but yourself unless this is for money.

Personally the kind of development where a motif is worked and worked some more tends to bore me. I only do literal repetition when the apparent form cannot live without it. I relate to moments that don't come back

Yeah, I had that inclination as well, but almost like that it was being held back some how. I'll probably try an alternate version.

Makes perfect sense :tu: and no, it's not for money…I always liked what Prince says in Under the Cherry Moon, "I do nothing professionally, I do everything for fun."

The instrumental creates an interesting atmosphere - it could be a film
score for an exciting scene. I really like the positioning of the sounds
in the room and the clarity of the mix! A very nice instrumental -
very well done! :tu:

I listened to version sn_79.4. Most of this is impressive. Mysterious and majestic. It could be the opening titles for Blade Runner. Just when I was hoping it was going to build into a big theme, we get a blippy Casio sequence at 2:18 and then it sort of slinks away never really delivering the goods. I think the drums are mixed too loud.

An enjoyable listen. :tu:

Yeah, that's my dilemma, whether or not to make this really open up. I kind of was digging that it's like I'm going to get big and grand…but sorry no! I can see how this would be frustrating to the listener though. I think I'm going to do an alternate version where the earlier build continues.

Thanks for listening, I'll check the drums.
