I often read the reviews. I'm very cautious about trying demo's and installing anything I haven't researched or sounded out first.Kriminal wrote: Does anyone actually read the reviews anyway? Surely they try the demos instead.

the 'chatters' here are heterogenous user/dev, but i would hope that there is a sufficiently large enough 'user base' all in all to make disallowing dev reviews have little impact on the overall # of reviews.
i think it's reasonable to disallow dev reviews, and not that anyone gives a shit, i also think that removing old reviews because someone became a dev is.. i'm gonna say 'unsporting.'
despite the overall negative tone, even mr. conrardy expressed that the review was helpful.
w/o a grain of salt, one is not fully cooked, or some shit.
'..or some shit' - can that be my kvr tag, where it says 'kvrian'?

So how do you define user? For every hour I spend in SynthEdit I spend around 50 in ORION as a "user" and I feel that I am able to be as unbiased as anyone about a product, especially as I give my synths away for free - I have nothing to gain by badmouthing a so-called "competitor".WhiteNoise wrote:Let the reviews be user reviews.

I agree with BONES. I occasionally tinker with SynthEdit but wouldn't suddenly consider myself a "developer" just because I released a SynthEdit creation to the unsuspecting public.

dunno If I'm just silly for posting this because your already awareBONES wrote: Call it my pathetic little protest but it should also provide a measure of remedy to the other problem I am facing - bandwidth.
To address this problem I have decided to remove all but the latest synths. Without asking, it seems that my bandwidth has been reset again so I will make the changes in the next day or so. From then on only the Generation 4 synths and the k1 basic synth will be available.
but web hosts give you x amount of bandwidth per month depending on what 'package' you buy
maybe it was just that time of the month for your host so you got your bandwidth back
when I signed up to lunarpages I was only getting about 100 mb of space and I forget how much bandwidth per month, and I did reach the limit a few times
but it was always a few days before a new month started,so not much to stress over.
for being a loyal customer they've upped both without raising the price
I get 1000 mb of storage and as far as I can tell unlimited bandwidth. So now I can use it for my website, online storage, and send those big wav files to collaborators without worrying about how much is left.
sometimes it pays to pay.

I thought there was a unenforced rule that beta testers qualified themselves when reviewing and I think that freeware developers, if qualified, should be allowed to discuss their likes/dislikes.
As a rule of thumb I don't review much anymore and when I do it's because I really like a synth and want others to know, if only a few hours, that there's a interesting synth worth checking.
As for payware products that are SE there should be no lines seperating them from hand coded reviewers. Frankly, there are a lot of horrible synths imo, both hand coded and via SE. My solution has been to only review what I like...a lot.
I happen to have been the person that wrote a review after reading your M42 review BONES. Neither of us have any problems with one another, or I assume that. I like your killerz. They show a quality side to what good GUIs are all about and their sound is frequently useful to me.
In the M42 situation I thought the review got pulled because you stated you didn't own it. I would have supported that review to stay, other than being modified with the "I make SE synths" exception. Your objections actually made me appreciative of M42 more than I'd realized. I haven't completed my homework on it but didn't know it used standard components. I thought some were unique.
You were wrong about the sample library as it is vastly larger than the demo which points more to the spacy side of the synth, and what attracted me to it in the first place. Your mention of UGO's work made me happy he still makes SE synths and keeps them free.
But I hold no dislike to SE developers who charge. Unless things have changed I thought Jeff didn't mind, and although we all have opinions it's his that counts more.
Ben, might a solution be having SE devs register as well as traditional devs. Then allow for devs to discuss others synths. I realize that there will be problems like Xavier/Arturia every now and then and there will be people such as BONES who have blunt, acerbic reviews. Maybe a contested review should have a disclaimer and the negative dev reviewer should have his biases right there in front of everyone.
It sure would have saved a lot of grief although it would be a pain to implement a system like that as some would still see it as unfair intervention. I don't, but I'm a reviewer, also why I haven't been reviewing here of late, I didn't want to make things seem an advert for my site or the ones I do reviews for. Nor did I want to piss people off.
Bones, I do like M42 a lot. I am officially reviewing it and can say right now it's going to get a good review. But so would your synths and quite honestly, I don't have as much use for them and some of the series one synths are a bit 'cold' and harsh. The latter wouldn't bother you, or at least I don't think it would. But that's part of the problem with anyone that has anything involved outside of K-v-R.
I always mention when I beta tested a synth and as in my site and my way of working I'm one of the people who give out too many 10s. To those that loath it though shit; I have better ways of spending my time sharing my thoughts than going after synths I don't like. I prefer to discuss what I like and be honest about faults. Jon from COFX knows this. He also knows that I express my views privately as much as I do publically. I do this with many developers because I want to see independent developers and not this Korg's greatest hit for $500 USD. That offends me, and I've heard it but do not have a copy so won't review. It's good but there's better and for the Wavestation, which insterests me most, let's just say there's a bunch of synths out there now that do better, sound better, are better but don't have Korg's sysex. otoh, they have sample import.
In any case.
1. if a synth is for sale it should not be exempt in any way. As a supporter of SE synths I say this as some synths are abysimal but some are worth every penny.
2. Reviewers should also be exempt and if that becomes so I'll understand if my reviews are removed. I hope that doesn't happen but I chose to do this on my own free will.
3. coders should be allowed to discuss one another's synths but under their name and with the statement that they make competitive instruments or at the least, are shareware or commercial developers
There have been some overly aggressive jerks in the past but they were outed and torn to shreds. I have a copy of moog modular V that sat on my desk for a month as I agonized over using the well meant and quite generous gift. I didn't like how Arturia handled themsleves but I must also report that their service has been excellent and their product works quite well. Is it the best? To quote a movie, "there is another one..." and leave it as a cliffhanger. My point though is, much as I didn't like the companies actions at K-v-R, nor did about 5 other boards once they got wind by K-v-Rians, I can't fault MMV and what I felt was lacking is in MMV 2. But until I'm 100% sure they've gotten it together and my posts haven't been removed from their Yahoo group (I know two that never saw the light of day, and they were friendly) I wouldn't review them. When the day comes where I feel they've earned it the review will be quite positive.

Absolutely I'm not. I have always considered myself a SynthEdit user. I think the developer tag should be reserved for those who code custom modules or, at the very least, don't just put out instruments using bog-standard components like I do. e.g. ugo or EVM.WhiteNoise wrote:Would you say you're not a developer then?
