Regarding the NH-D15, it's performance isn't drastically different vs the NH-U14S.

The Noctua coolers are great for 10th-Gen CPUs.
If you want maximum performance from a 12900k (or 5950x), you need more robust cooling.

CPUs with 16+ cores have larger temp swings (under load) then previous generations.
You can build a quiet 12900k or 5950x based machine...
But it's more complex than dealing with the 10900k.

Same is true with the 10980xe.
Air-cooling just isn't enough when the CPU is under substantial load.

Then again there seems to be properly working builds with that cooler so :?:
Soft Knees - Live 12, Diva, Omnisphere, Slate Digital VSX, TDR, Kush Audio, U-He, PA, Valhalla, Fuse, Pulsar AUDIO, NI, OekSound etc. on Win11Pro R7950X & RME AiO Pro

Will the machine run? Yes.
Will it run with maximum potential? No.

Some folks have used the D15 with Threadripper builds.
It runs...
Put that machine under a substantial load (like rendering a video)... and you'll find it thermal-throttles.

Try rendering a video with a 10980xe cooled by the NH-D15.
I've tested all this...
It will thermal-throttle.
No 16+ core DAW leaves our shop with air-cooling.
