only a word to the wise. might need to post in the music cafe forum to get your feedback. you can decide if it's good or not. just uncomfortable about posting before things are finished. in the meantime guess starting on subtractive could be good.

I strongly recommend you get one of the "big" synths and take it from there. The typical suspects are Serum, Falcon and Phase Plant.
I personally recommend phase plant, its simple but complex. Plus you can sign up for the subscription for 10 bucks (you get a 100e/d voucher after a year) it will give you both the things you asked about! You get a very flexible synth with a lot of engines that still easy and fun to use, you get 30 effect units and you get a multiband wrapper to create effect stacks. I actually think its the perfect next step for what you're asking.
If you don't want to go the subscription route, I would probably get a license for serum -- I owned Falcon and its just too 'bulky' for me.
Depending on DAW, I wouldn't stress about upgrading FX yet (especially if its Ableton or BitWig), you can probably still do a lot more than you imagine. Having 'one big synth' you're familiar with, is definitely worth it though.

thanks gExpect. after watching the promo videos they all look decent. the phase plant seems awesome but the other two are prolly more my speed atm. i've already seen some tutorial videos by uncertified instructors which would be a big help when learning. haven't counted phase plant out yet but also now thinking to use one of these with my midi controller instead of buying a new synthesizer/keyboard. will have to see what the budget will allow but great recommendations.
