The thing that I really didn't appreciate a long time ago, was the extent to which traditional instruments are "pre-mixed", in the sense that they've evolved as units within ensembles. Electronic music with limitless sonic possibilities involves understanding the basis for those sorts of ensemble relationships so as not to make a complete mess (usually as a result of succumbing to the impulse to try to make everything 'massive' or 'phat').

I guess the mixing techniques/approaches developed via the evolution of electronic music fed back into the way that traditional instruments are mixed in many genres, leading to more surgical cutting and clearing out of frequencies in general.

Don't buy any plugins use the ones with your DAW till you think you are getting the hang of it, and if you aren't or hate mixing you've saved some money you can put towards getting it done by someone who knows what they are doing.

You don't have to churn out tracks as fast as you think.

Better to take your time and finish one until you are content with it.

Not that you're wrong for me this has proven to be terrible advice. My top tip would be to get productive, stay productive. Keep it moving. Especially at first, don't dwell on anything past the point of utility.. especially not technical or 'quality' related. Find your 'voice'. Have something to say first, then work on getting it out perfectly. There's already too many perfectly produced shitty ideas out there.

Another one, kinda related: don't assume you're Mozart. Your ideas really aren't that great or original as you think, especially not at first (neither are mine). It's a skill you have to develop as well. In that sense I definitely agree with LeVzi. Slow down in that sense. But at the same time, you can't train your idea machine much if you're still stuck on manicuring last year's big idea into bland perfection

. It's a balance. I definitely had to learn that. I can be a massive perfectionist to the point of obsession.. not a joke, it's not healthy and I end up running in circles creatively. A big part of staying creative for me has become: eat/sleep well, exercise, stay healthy, get out, live, see stuff, travel, meet people, socialise, develop interests outside of music.

This is one I really need to get better at. I see a shiny new plug-in or update and feel the need to buy it and then never use it or drop it on a drum track and that's that. I'd have saved thousands HAHA
