Couldn't you have added a poll to this thread? Any reason you skipped WinXP or Win98 and went all the way back to 95 ?

Does anyone really use Win 95 in 2022 ? (I don't mean those who are into "retro computers") :?

I think it would be interesting to get the KVR usage statistics rather than some pulled from the internet. That might actually be useful for some developers.

You'd need to add Mac OS (which version) and Linux (which Distro) to be accurate.
Win 95 by mistake, yeah starting with Win98 maybe better.

It would be very interesting if someone could start a poll, I don't know how to do.
Could anyone please start a poll!?

Post

I don't know if you can edit a post to add a poll but just create a new thread and down toward the bottom select "Poll Creation" and follow the instructions.

I don't think so. KVR Audio is a fraction of the market, and, people tend to vote strangely in such polls as well (e.g., the 32-bit crew will be very motivated in to vote in "Do you use 64-bit or 32-bit plugins?" polls).

Let's be honest: Polls here don't mean a thing. What's useful for developers is what people actually use, and, that won't be too far away from the general OS market share. Probably even less for Windows 7, because, many audio software isn't supported on Windows 7 anymore.

That's not true. I demo very often newly released plugins and I remember only two plugins that did not work in Win7 in the last 2 years.
Even when you read system requirements Win 8 or higher or Win 10 in most cases it also works in Win 7.
New Waves plugins do not run in win7 and
generally Antares (but I do not need or want their plugins anyway)

Still works in Windows 7
Softube
Arturia
Plugin Alliance
Sonnox Oxford
Kitplugins
Baby Audio
UVI
Roland Cloud
Fabfilter
AA
Eventide (also new spliteq) and many more

Most devs seem to be more clever than Waves,
because I am pretty sure a lot of buyers
still use Win 7.
The target clients are bedroom or hobby producers with rather low budget and many a man will not switch from Win 7 until pc "dies" ;)
It would be better to let an influencer make a poll here, because he could attract more people to join the poll.
So I kindly ask an influencer to start a poll in Kvraudio. Thanks

Not supported doesn't equal doesn't work. Especially Windows is very compatible, with current and former version. If the 500 € software/plugin stops at some point in Windows 7 though, you're out of luck. Nobody will fix it, because it's not supported.

It's not about being clever or not. There are some things present in Windows 10 and 11 which aren't present in Windows 7, or, developers work with frameworks which won't work in Windows 7 anymore.

Windows 7 isn't safe if you're reliant on running more current software.

You are right, when there is an update a plugin could not work in Win 7, but this also isn't a big issue, just keep on using the old version. The plugins I have work in Win 7 and I am fine with the versions I have with most plugins. So maybe I was just lucky to not have garabbed a plugin that causes issues.
I am glad Cockos Reaper still supports all kinds of old different versions, frankly I'd be fine with stock plugins only.

Nobody round here wants 'influencers' infesting the place, thanks.

As most influencers are just bought shills for the industry anyway (apart from their other questionable motives, narcissism being the most prominent), none of them would start such a poll.

Sadly I can't use my few waves plugins anymore at the moment although my studio is win 10, as they don't let me just download the installers. Instead I have to install their software to create offline installers and my internet pc is still win 7, 32 bit. And I would have to do a complete new install to change it to 64 bit and I am far too lazy for that, and that pc is over 15 years old, so... No..

Well there are several developers who frequent KVR whether they have forums here or post regularly or not.

Of course KVR is just a slice of the market but if you think the general market is a better representation of what OS DAW owners use then we'll have to disagree. I'd say KVR membership is highly likely to be a good representation of the general DAW market.

I've seen developers post here than Mac users make up 50% of their sales and of course Macs don't make up 50% of the general OS market.

Would a Poll here be 100% accurate? If people would participate and be honest it could come pretty close and provide at least some information to developers who wished to view the poll.

In the end a Poll would be far more useful and interesting than yet another "what's your favorite" thread.

Anyway the OP asked:
Leo1999 wrote: Sun Jun 05, 2022 8:21 am Is there a poll or any information what os daw users have today?
My advice was to start a Poll as that would be the most accurate way to gather information here without having to read every reply and tabulating the results yourself and it would be an easy way for everyone to view those results.

KVR Audio has 473.083 forum users. Most of those (probably 95%) are nominal members. Most of the rest won't participate in such polls.

Enough said IMO.

Sure there is only a small percentage of registered KVR members who participate at all but these are people who buy the software promoted here.

Even a poll here with little participation gives an idea of OS usage for DAW/Plugin users who are part of the target market for said software.

The OS preference of gamers is only of interest for those who develop games. OS usage for video content creators is another market and so on.

Again a Poll to answer the OP's question would be far more interesting and useful than yet another "what's your favorite" thread or any of the other pointless threads that seem to have become de rigueur these days.

Enough said....

Hi, Leo1999! Brian from Roland Cloud here. I saw this post and wanted to offer some info. We have phased out support for most of our catalog on Windows 7 as of Roland Cloud Manager 2.6. At present, Sound Canvas & Concerto are the only instruments in The Roland Cloud Collection that are compatible with Windows 7. All other instruments and expansion content are supported on Windows 10 or MacOS 10.14 minimum. Thanks! 😊
