That Sai'ke filter FM plugin sounds great too. There's a new version since that video with some more capabilities. Though obviously since it comes after the synth, so it can only work monophonically. But for basses and leads that's fine.

I think the issue here is likely not that filter FM isn't used on any famous songs, but that the patches are quite difficult to reverse-engineer compared to a simpler subtractive patch.

Yeah Saike makes banging plugs for free. You gotta jump some hoops to use them outside of Reaper, which is a downside I guess. But they're super worthwhile. This is probably my favorite one.

Thanks for all the recommendations! Would you say that all these VST's are successful at emulating the (theoretically un-emulate-able according to some internet experts) audio rate filter modulation of a HW analog synth?

Yeah, they do. I should have added Arturia’s Prophet 5 V. I put it up to my Prophet 6 and found it to sound super close. GForce’s OB-E is excellent as well.

Also, is there some "canonical" tune that features a HW synth performing audio rate filter modulation? Like "Tom Sawyer" is the canonical filter sweep tune.

you can also fm the filter in DIVA iirc

Diva does it, but it doesn’t sound very good. Kind of muted, like he’s band limiting things too much. There was a thread where he explained that he had to because he wanted to get 16 voices running on the min-spec computer of the day.

I did some searching on the 'net, but the only examples I could find were either from digital synths, or behind a paywall. Can you point me to some good examples of this famous audio rate filter modulation? Are there some well-known tracks that feature this sound?

Since this thread started I picked up VCV Rack Pro, but the stand-alone version is free. If you make sure the sample rate is high (as high as 4X your audio interface’s), it does a great job of all sorts of audio rate modulation. The Vult modules (some are free) are especially good emulations.

F that blow hard.

I use it all the time. One of my favorite bass sounds comes from my ATC-X, but it can be easily replicated with other synths. Make your main oscillator a sawtooth. Tune your filter to about mid way. If it has a drive setting, keep it down at first, but experiment with it later. Then take the oscillator that can drive the filter (sometimes this is arbitrary, like in Dune) and make it a square wave that’s one octave down from the saw. Adjust filter to taste. It just does a huge beefy sound, if the software is up to it. Sometimes I like software more than hardware for this, especially if the part is going to move around the keyboard a lot. VCOs are not normally that good at being calibrated to sound in tune over more than 2-3 octaves, but the software can. This way, you don’t get weird beating when you play a high note.

I haven't compared it to my Bass Station 2 but I really like the sounds I get using filter FM from osc3 in TAL Mod!
