I think the best advice is not to treat the vocal as a single track, especially when you have different singing styles within it. Put the whispered parts on one track, the quietly sung parts on another and the belted out parts on a third. Then mix each according to its needs. Run them into a bus for your overall effects like chorus, reverb and delay, which will help tie them back together.

As _leras says, chop up the vocal and use individual clip gain to even it out, rather than compressing the hell out of it. That is much easier to work with than automation, which can get fiddly.

I think I plan on doing this. The track template I'm using has 3 vocal track spaces routed to one sum. I've hacked the vocal to death and I need to get to where I want it to end then I can bounce that and put the tracks where they belong. I also want to deal with Volume Automation but I'm close to frying the CPU as it is.

Parallel processing usually works for me:

Eq, compression, parralel processing, reverb, delays are all great things for vocals,

but,

you have to get all your parts roughly prepared and at the right volumes for each section before you can really start to use any of these next steps effectively.

I automate volumes in relation to the perspective parts after all the processing but this will really depend on the source material.

You can try parallel compression, there is a great video of Dom Sigalas on youtube he explains it very excellent. It will bring out your vocal in the mix in a very clean & professional way without messing anything. What I can recommend is to use automation during the entire song, let it play and use a knob to find the balance between louder/quiet parts of your vocals. I always start with an EQ (doing some filters) then compressors 1176 slow attack and fast release, ratio of 1:4 until the dynamic range feels small, LA-2A compressing and making up, Pultec for more EQ and coloring, maybe saturation after it depends. De esser + mb compressor in the highs 8-9k+ of 2db. then filtering again a little and maybe another LA-2A if necessary but that's it. Parallel compressions for the mid-range as a send, opening 1176 in all-in mode and a very aggressive compression of the signal, then the send automation gives it some smoothness and balance

If some parts are whispered, alter the arrangement to suit.

If you have to hyper process the vocals to get them right, something else is wrong.
